Think You're a PC Nerd? Take the Geek Quiz 2010 and Find Out!

Imagine yourself competing in the geekiest of all game shows, facing off against the geekiest of geeks—those characters of pop culture whose intellectual excellence you aspired to as a child and still seek to emulate in present day. Could you hang? Could you hold your own in such rarefied company, matching wits with the best of ‘em? Sadly, we can never know that, but Maximum PC’s annual Geek Quiz is a pretty good indicator of brain power in its own right. And you don’t even need to be first to the buzzer or frame your answers in question form. So what’s stopping you, smarty pants? It’s time to get your Quiz on!

2900 out of 6000. Ouch. I am suitably ashamed.
I also suspect some others who posted their scores cheated ;-)

Only 54/60 .... too many US specific questions for a mere Kiwi. I've done better in previous years. BTW the '46-60 Correct' hex code is wrong - the third line should read OC29985A3A34F.......... I don't think the script for Pulp Fiction included a Square bracket.

Wow... some really good Q's. One or two total "huh?" moments, couple of "no way!"s and at least one "foul!"
fun times.

2600. I missed a couple of easy ones with the A & B options. I never was very good at standardized tests.

So I guess 2600/6000 could be worse, but these past few years in IT management vs doing any actual IT work has taken its toll on my geek cred.

I have to point out that it was very disappointing that I couldn't get past the first question when trying to take the quiz on my Droid X. Something about that just seems wrong. :(

Did anyone else have trouble logging in and saving their score? I got a 5600/6000, but when I tried to log in and save it nothing happened.

3200 out of 6000 but it doesn't compare to Vader being "impressed" by me. :)

Or something like that. I didn't write it down and when I logged in, my score was gone. But, I didn't look anything up. Hope I get a droid figure.

Just 20 correct for me, and most of them were guessing. Apparently I need to lock myself in a closet with a bunch of pop tarts and Maximum PC mags.

Actually, if you take all of the letters, convert them to numbers and add down, 12 rounds later and it all adds up to 1, literally. I still can't seem to understand it, but I guessed that that was the resulting sum, and well, I was right. Took me awhile to do all of the math, but was a great time waster nonetheless. Thanks guys! PS, I still haven't taken the quiz, lol. Oh well.

Ok, so I took it and yeah, I agree, it kinda sucks. Of course, the quiz is labeled as a "geek quiz", but it's not really a geek quiz, it's more of a "jack-of-all-nerds" quiz. Every year it's like that. Oddly, I got more right on stuff i just guessed at than I did seriously answering, lol.

85A399898340A2A8A2A385944BCan anyone guess what does that mean? The one that can figure it out is a real geek...
No need of playing the game anymore

Not NEARLY as good as last years. FAR to many questions that I'm guessing 90% of the people that took the quiz just guessed. What model of Phone was Neos based off of? Really... thats just random Trivia or fandom... Geekyness is one thing, overboard is another. Or some random yet close together dates for some random spec? Meh... needs more "What is this connector" or "how would you do this?" or "whats wrong with this picture" stuff. Things that get you thinking, and less pop-culture, or random reference information.
Although, granted I did get a lot of easy, actual tech questions wrong... over thinking it I guess? Not sure why I thought a GPU would have more transitors then a CPU XD. On wait... it does. I guess I picked the right answer then?

It didn't ask "What has more transitors". It asked which "CPU" did.

Sorry, but whoever is responsible for the picture has Scotty's uniform on backwards. Every true Geek knows the Star Trek emblem is on the (wearer's) left side.

As amusing as this little quiz might be, it was very disappointing to see how many pages this damn thing took up in the printed magazine rather than using the valuable space for meaningful content.

My score was 4200/6000. Also there are 2 bugs with the quiz:
-#38 says pcie 2.9 not 2.0. but the magazine says 2.0.
-#51 says witch cpu but the gtx 480 is a gpu

If you get a perfect score, you get this comment:
C3888583924096A4A340A38885408289874082
9981899540969540C29985A3A35A40E896A47D

85A399898340A2A8A2A385944BIt's not ASCII, or a jpg, or a gif, or a png. It's 90 bytes long. I thought it might be a hash, but Reverse MD5 hash lookup doesn't know the original ...

Looks like hexadecimal to me. Try converting it to base 10 or binary and see what results.
EDIT: If all of the numbers are added (with a=10, b=11, etc.), you get 1,080. Aside from being a common vertical pixel size for TV's, this means nothing to me.
In base 10, it is 3.78216383303x10^27
In binary, it is 0011100100100100000010011000000000000000000000000000000000000000
Hopefully, this means something to someone.

4600/6000
Last year's Quiz was much more difficult.
All these questions are just general facts that you pick up along the way.
