It was about 2" or 3", but it certainly wasn't 1", just to let you know.

it's probably about a couple of feet above it now since all the posts pushed it down...

I think someone didn't do their homework, because the D5400XS (skulltrail) does support SLI:

http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/motherboards/d5400xs/d5400xs-overview.htm

Maingear sells their Skulltrail system with the option of two 280GTXs.

Second, if they bothered to liquid cool the video cards, not only could they overclock, they could have had two free PCI slots, one of which could have housed a lovely and FULLY FUNCTIONAL Auzen X-Fi Prelude, compared to the neutered Creative card.

Third, as for the "mysterious" hard drives, if it was just one drive, I would guess a FusionIO with pre-release Windows drivers.  Hell, if they'd gone with the Auzen Prelude, they could have had two slots to run them in RAID.

Fouth, why a skulltrail?  Slower DDR2, and PCIe 1.1?  "OOh, we can use it to multitask!"  Right.  Let's see how it performs against a 790i with THREE 280GTXs, shall we?

Lastly,

Can't you people count?  Part 3 of 3.... followed by part 4!

We're done here.  Move along, nothing to see...

It does support SLI, and now I am scratching my head, but however the 4870 X2 beats any of Nvidia's GPUs!

This is the third part of the Dream Machien parts unveiling.  The "fourth part" you refer to is going to be a behind-the-scenes look at how we built the machine.  That has nothing to do with parts.

"That has nothing to do with parts"

Mistery hard drives count as parts, mister.

MaximumPC, you have done it again! I have taken all the machines that were close rivals to the Dream Machine '08 and spec'd & benchmarked them all. If I am guessing correctly, you should land on top of every single thing. This machine put me in a awe too (Little PCs put me in awe)! Oh, for anyone else, the following are what I wished could go in the Machine:

- 2 WD VelociRaptors (2x 300 GB; 10,000 RPM) or 128 GB SSD (Who Knows?)
- 52 in 1 Media Card Reader
- TV Tuner Card (Who doesn't want TV?)
- Windows XP Pro (64 bit)
- Internet Card

And the Dream Machine '08 Closest Competitors:
- Mac Pro
- Blackbird 002
- XPS 730

Finally, what shocked me:
- 4870 X2

TheDuck also has to wonder: Should I throw away my Geforce FX 5500?
(Then I need a low-profile video card if I throw it away)

Great Job Maximum PC!

hmm, u wonder wht nvidia is gonna do to counter the 4870x2, im thinking maybe a 280x2 on a 55mn process.

Hey maxpc, I heard that soundcards running on the pci-express bus have had long outstanding problems. Has creative finally managed a workaround on this or is this this new card still plagued by the same troubles?

thanks

ps

word around a lot of the audiophile forums is that the auzentech card trumphs the creative solutions. thoughts?

avatar

pcfxer

Auzentech still pwns, not too mention replaceable op-amps. For games though, higher FPS with Creative solutions...not sure about Vista for anything, I'm using FreeBSD :)

4870x2 isn't even out yet, and you guys used a picture of a 4870

avatar

TheMurph

Yikes!  Pulled the wrong photo.  Gimme one second and I'll fix that.

I thought at first that you guys will used Dell's XPS 720 case coz im wondering why its kinda curve. Now that you revealed its HP Blackbird 002 hmmm... after rubbing it with sandpaper to make it shine (me being sarcastic) thats IMPRESSIVE!!! now can we upgrade and change the name to "MPC Dream Machine 2008 "SILVER PHOENIX":) ...

Im thinkin if Intel make a little bit of space on its D5400XS board between the PCIs, makin it more longer to have room for 4 2x slot video card and 3 to 2 more for add-ons, I'm  pretty sure MPC won't think twice bringing 4x Radeon HD 4870 in the stage but thats 2x Radeon HD 4870 still its fast, not fast but very1,000,000 FAST!!!

Plus 2x Core 2 Extreme QX9775 O.C. to 4 GHz d _ _n!!!

Maximum PC will never called it Dream Machine if we won't dream about it... 20 thumbs up... MPC you ROCK!!!

By the way guys where are the old MPC Dream Machines?

Why, oh why, would you chose a CreateSHIT soundcard?

avatar

JPmatt6

Who are you kidding? Creative makes great soundcards, the problem lies with the driver support in linux. In Windows, there's nothing better. Sure, some may sound more colorful, but Creative's are accurate.

Also, what a case! How much did that cost?

what about the less than mediocre drivers?

avatar

JPmatt6

I did note the lack of support for linux, but I guess I should mention Vista, and 64-bit everything... But they're still the best cards.

The cards are worthless if the drivers don't work properly.  I guess you can take the card out of the case and look at it I suppose.

avatar

Donnie27

I own a Prelude and a Creative X-Fi.  Yes, the drivers work. In fact they've always worked for me.  No frills Xgamer with front case I/O connectors might have been a better choice.

avatar

whisp

Hacked drivers for vista have been made widely available and working fine for quite some time.

As always, nice job guys!  Way to go Murp.
