No quibbles here with the 15 selected, with an especial kudo to Downey for making your list twice, and for getting his act back together as Tony Stark, but I do hope for a list sequel that might include Nicholas Cage.

Yes, yes, I know he has a well connected Hollywood bloodline that gets him to the casting call, but his geekness is broad based.

Surely he is at least in line for the Lifetime Achievement Award for portraying geeks.

Whether he gets on the list by juggling lethal green glass balls as the Beatles obsessed biochemist Stanley Goodspeed in "The Rock" (not to mention getting equal screen time with Connery) or deftly and professionally scanning porn for murder clues in "8MM", you gotta at least acknowledge his deciphering of shreds of innocuous hieroglyphics (maybe the Da Vinci Code) in "National Treasure".

How about Bruce Dern's character from Silent Running.  He sacrificed himself to save Earth's remaining fauna. A heroic thing to do I'd say.

& the poker games with the robots qualifies as Geek+.

Hmm... really, really good suggestions. I myself bemoaned the absence of Kick-Ass, from the movie, Kick-Ass. Perhaps we need to do a Part II.

What about the Nite Owl from Watchmen?  He built a tunnel under New York, his own ship, and various gadgets!  He totally counts.

This one may be a stretch...but maybe not so much.

Ferris Bueller "I asked for a car, I got a computer..." hacked his school's computer to change his absentee days, had a keyboard with sounds he loaded from a 5 1/4" floppy-disk, rigged the ULTIMATE sleeping-boy decoy (complete with snoring sounds), and did it all for what?? So he could spend the day at the museum with his hot girlfriend (who didn't dump him for it).

Righteous Dude with Geek Cred.

Where are Wyatt and Gary from John Hughes' movie Weird Science?

It might not be the greatest movie ever but the guys created a "perfect" woman!!!! A woman. This is every geeks' dream.

Jarod from The Pretender series should have made it.

Good list though.

Where's Lt. Cmdr Data?  WHERE'S SPOCK??

MaximumPC missed Roy Hinkley (usually referred to as the Professor) from Gilligan's Island. He could make anything (except a boat or raft) out of bamboo, coconuts and minerals found on the island.

Geez, where is David Lightman from War Games?! Or Chloe O'Brian from 24? Yeah, she's a chic, but still!

Biggins

What about Samantha Carter from Stargate SG-1? All that scientific talk about wormholes and she doesn't even get a honorable mention? Are you saving her for a "15 Geek Heroes - part 2" article?

I would suggest Daniel Jackson, but his only skills were translating and reading books. I don't think he qualifies as a geek hero.

I would have liked to see Kevin Flynn on this list.

Did Tank die off camera? I know his replacement is the guy from Oz but what happened to Tank?

avatar

Slugbait

Yeah, he either died from his wounds inflicted by Cypher, or died in a later operation aboard the Nebuchadnezzer. All his sister said was that she lost two brothers to that ship. The W Brothers never gave a definitive answer, AFAIK.

Officially, the actor was fired when they couldn't agree on salary. He sued, then admitted trolling the studio and press junkets a few years later.

From Wikipedia: "The crew could not heal his wound due to the fact that the plasma shot left his wound permanent. Tank died two months after the events in The Matrix but before the events in the sequel, The Matrix Reloaded.[citation needed] The character's duties as ship's Operator was handed over to Link, who is married to Tank and Dozer's sister, Zee.

The demise of the character was reportedly due to actor Marcus Chong's salary demands and conflicts with the Wachowski brothers, the writers and creators of the Matrix series, leading to his removal.[5]"
