I have used ExamsDeal for all my Cisco certifications and got all. I am very happy with the results! The main difference between them and other sellers is that they provide most current exam questions without any errors. With basic understanding and their study material, you can get your certification in a very first attempt. my 2 cents! http://www.examsdeal.com/

For giggles I decided to try one since I haven't used a screen saver in years and wanted a blast from the past. Um yeah. Download 3 different ones and scanned them, and all 3 were infected by at least 3 uninvited guests. Kinda surprised MPC lauded a bunch of infected screen savers to us. >:(

I stopped using screen savers in the days of the ATI Moebius. I installed it and heard my GPU fan scream away. So i check GPU temp and almost schatt myself. While it may be fun to watch Zombies or Frog, check your temps especially if on a note book!!!

I guess the key word here is "retro"spective.

I'm happy the days of screensaver are dead. Thanks for the trip down memory lane though.

Is there no way to have this writer reported or something? He publish viruses.

avatar

Jeffredo

Screensavers? Who needs that anymore? My monitor turns off after ten minutes of inactivity.

Matrix SS is infected with Adware.Downware.398 and Win32/DownloadAdmin.G

Bad form for a computer and technology Website.

Trust anything else here? Probably not.

I remember when MPC meant something.

I just downloaded the file. Go to CNET. DO NOT USE THEIR DOWNLOADER. Click on the link that says: Direct Link. Download file. Send to Virustotal.com and then see this report: https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/fd1d4d5a3f7abfff4a3da3f875f802413125521e27f1f8c52c5077bec48fac93/analysis/

Completely clean.

Again, key lesson that everyone should follow at this point on all web sites that offer downloads: Don't just click the first link that says Download.

Lame as lame gets. Don't put up stuff that shows no one is doing their homework then come back like it's not on you. Sure everyone is responsible for their junk...this means you too. Please give me the boot..ho ho ho

Has anyone noticed the HAL-9000 screen savers using HUGE amounts of CPU Usage? I tried it and my CPU Usage Meter shows my 4 cores hitting as much as 90% at the same time to show those screens!! That's the most I have ever seen from a screen saver and they aren't even 3D!!! WTF????

avatar

Exarkun1138

I found out what was causing the high CPU Usage.....Windows 8! I just went back to Windows 7 on my main Desktop Computer, due to some issues I had with Windows 8, and just plain missing so many of the cool features and look of Windows 7.

I installed the HAL-9000 Screen Saver on my Windows 7 setup, and the CPU Usage is below 2%! I have 3 monitors, and use Ultra-Mon, and have the HAL-9000 Screen Saver running on each monitor and I still only hit around 2 - 4% MAX CPU Usage when they are running.

So it was an issue with Windows 8 that the Screen Saver didn't like. That figures! I'll stick with Windows 7 for the foreseeable future.

Seriously does anyone check what's being posted on this site? I hope this is the first and last time you post viruses MaximumPC.

Seti@Home is no more it has now consolidated into BOINC. BOINC is a small application that enables you download different projects that will use your CPU when it is in idle mode. The different projects include Seti@Home, LHC@Home, Malaria Research etc.

Just spent the last hour trying to clean out the Virus's from the Cat Licking Screen saver, and I never even got to see the cat licking my screen LOL.

avatar

MrPC2010

Huh why does Maximum PC post infected links? Thankfully I have an antivirus.

avatar

siramic

Yes, I just uploaded the BSOD screensaver to VirusTotal, and even though it "only" was flagged by 3 scanning engines, that's enough for me, as I'm sure it has OpenCandy attached somehow. Not real hip on the Softonic website anyway.

avatar

gordonung

Softonic's downloader is similar to many of the downloaders these days: laden with adware which you can avoid if you actually uncheck all of the different option boxes. I just installed it on an unpatched WinXP build and had no issues. All Softonic does is repackage the old Sysinternals Bluescreen. I actually located a link off of Microsoft's web site for the Sysinternals Bluescreen screen saver and we have updated the link. I sent it to Virustotal.com and four engines show it as a threat: Jokeware. I don't think that counts.

avatar

siramic

Thank you Gordon, for looking into that, and for your feedback. I did see the alternative link from Microsoft during my search, so thanks for updating that for us, too :) You're right, disabling the options on install is a valid choice, but I'm still thinking that their is something mischievous running in the background, "phoning home". Yet, it can be harder these days from getting around it, especially with the free utilities and their need for revenue. I think about a year or two ago, my AV disinfected SIW of it's add on.

Again, thank you for taking the time to post here, and MAXIMUM PC is still my favorite hard copy subscription. Keep up the good work :)

The sad thing is the state of download sites these days. Just downloading legit utilities and files makes you feel like you're trying to run through a field of grass with piles of dog poo everywhere.

avatar

siramic

lol, :)

avatar

Sysexternals

Many great screensavers here, but the majority of them install adware (that you can't opt out of).

avatar

Cube

I still use a screensaver for fun and the retro look.

I run a windows 98 virtual PC and a windows XP virtual machine and can run each on there own monitor so I have the loony tunes after dark screen saver installed and some other ones I used to run on my old windows 95/98/xp PCs.

For fun and I surf the web in both of them I can do crazy stuff and it don't matter since it is a virtual PC it can crash or get a virus and it don't matter. and I can play windows 95/dos games on it.

The windows 7 Pc they run on I have a 3d open GL screen saver that I run on my geforce titan it is not loud running so I don't mind it.

avatar

aarcane

I could not for the life of me get the Cat Licking one to install. Would you be so kind as to post a how to on that one?

avatar

jbbeger

Anyone else get a Virus from the matrix link... thanks.

avatar

And3rs0nTX

I just used the direct link so I didn't have to use their downloader.

avatar

gordonung

I actually ran this screen saver way, way back when it first came out but downloaded the latest version because it has multi-monitor support. If you are getting adware, it's because CNET is apparently now packaging adware in some of their downloaders. CNET's downloads used to be pretty safe, but these days, you don't know what you get.

However, if you look at the page that we linked, there are two options: With the CNET downloader and direct link. I clicked on the direct link and had no adware (confirmed with a Virustotal.com sweep).

The lesson is: Watch what download button you click. That's should be SOP at this point on the Internet as people are looking at ways to monetize the bandwidth they pay for.

avatar

jbbeger

Thank you for taking the time, and the for the info.

avatar

MrHasselblad

Couldn't help but also notice those issues as well.

Difficult to believe that Maximum PC would allow this to slip through.

avatar

Morete

Yeah, security firewall blocked it though. It was about three different ones.

avatar

"The Matrix" screensavers are so old, we had them come out in early '99, not that long after the movie came out!

avatar

ahamling27

Album art screensaver from Crayon Room. If you use iTunes or have a hoard of album art for your music collection, this is a pretty neat screensaver.

I have the HAL9000 screensaver, but last i saw, the multi-screen version was not free. Still, for those of us under the mono-screen bandwagon, it's a pretty cool looking screensaver, more so if you're a fan of the movie.

avatar

gordonung

I paid for the full version but I think the free version does have multi mon support because Nathan used to run the free one.

I've been using the Really Slick screensavers for many, many years. They just look so awesome, even today.

Frank and Louie, the Budweiser frogs.

avatar

I'm surprised none of the 3planesoft screensavers are on here. they still consistently pump out some of the best 3d screensavers at about 2 a year for the last 15 years.

avatar

harz3000gt

I second that. There are a few others including AquaReal 2 and SereneScreen Marine Aquarium 3 that didn't make the list that are also pretty spectacular.

You forgot the color clock! I've been using it for years.

VoodooLights was great, if not free.

My favorite screensaver was Johnny Castaway.

avatar

trgz

One of the best, if not the best, though rather avoided the whole issue of what screensaver was meant to do though as most of us had CRT's back then.
Think I got it running under W7 32-bit but haven't tried now I've gone 64-bit
I had the Monty Python set too, they were mental :-)

avatar

grandshadow3581

I miss the After Dark screensavers, I want the flying toasters back.

avatar

Ghok

Yes, back in the Windows 3 days they were seriously the best.
