Murph,

I gotta say, I liked both of these articles. I'm not sure where the sarcasm stops and the kidding begins, but I liked them both.

Touche.

As far as I know, Windows has no TRUE multitasking or multi-threading capabilities.

Tell me if I'm wrong, though.

avatar

TheMurph

I'll bite; I'm really curious to know what separates "true" from "fake" multitasking/multi-threading...

avatar

IFLATLINEI

Poor guys confusing all this PC talk with Smartphones.

avatar

kjrviking

what do you mean no "true multitasking"? cause im running win7 and i have a web browser, trillian, google desktop apps, and windows LIVE running, along with god knows what else running in the background, so if that is not multitasking, i don't know what is

avatar

M-ManLA

You are.

Multitasking is just saying you are doing more than one thing at a time. Any OS can do that.

"If you use any operating system that doesn't start with a "Microsoft"
and end with a "Windows" (and some kind of short letter or number
designation), then you have utterly failed in your attempt to keep
heathen software elements from besmirching the good name and reputation
of your precious PC"

I use Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop (dual boot with Vista... yes I know I should upgrade to 7 but I am getting a new PC soon so I don't see the point...) and have 9.10 running on my server.

For all it's flaws and mistakes Windows Vista wasn't completely crap. I actually enjoyed Vista and had some fun with it. There are modding communities that built some awesome mods into Vista. I don't know why but some even built an Vista that looks and acts like an Mac OSX install.

Vista did bring alot of changes some of which I welcomed because Windows XP was just plain old. Like DX10.

Windows 7 is actually a cleaned up and lightened Windows Vista that has some certain modifications to make the OS more elegant.

avatar

Havok

Whisman, you know better than to call Win7 a "cleaned up and lightened Windows Vista that has some certain
modifications to make the OS more elegant."

Not really... cause thats all 7 really is... the majority of the code is the same... and I liked Windows Vista too after SP2 came out... which was when I actually bought it...

Let me say this one last thing on the subject in a man on man fight I believe Bill Gates can kick Steve Jobs' Ass.

TheMurph

Indeed.  Anyone have any recommendations for a new phone?

avatar

Keith E. Whisman

The Honorable Mr. Gordon Mah Ung has extensive experience with Windows based cell phones. And you can't go wrong with an Android Phone. The Android phone is like Windows when it comes to customization. Sure the App Store isn't as big as the Apple store it's still far better as there are lots and lots of free apps and you can even build your own apps and you can even download apps from off the internet. You don't need Google's OK before installing an App from outside the Android market.

The Android phone allows you to root the phone and install third party roms and these roms are rather awesome. In fact the Sense UI looks alot like a third party home brewed Rom for Android.

Havok

What about the HTC Incredible? 'Butters' loves that phone.

But I'm pretty sure Linux can do all of that. Not saying that Windows is bad by any means, but your "If you use any operating system that doesn't start with a"Microsoft" and end with a "Windows" (and some kind of short letter or number designation)...." comment will have to be deemed invalid.

Other than that, Apple sucks.

"What?"

"This is not my fucking problem."

Linux has become alot better and Id run it over OSx anyday but Linux doesnt game. Not well.

avatar

neither does osx but wait theres more! linux is free?! hax.

all OS have its strong and weak points..i'm more of windows fan because for me its more user-friendly and it has tons of compatibility on software and hardware, etc..i also use ubuntu linux and for me it gives quite an expression on the way they have their gui's, but it still needs some getting use to and have problems on drivers..

on the other hand, mac os, on their claim of performance, they do have an advantage but it is set to a limit..most of apples products are pre-configured on softwares and hardwares..too bad, "free" is not an accepted term for this os, you want additional softwares, buy it and be sure to have deep pockets for that..

again, its all on the user who can tell what they do or do not want on these os'es..if you have the ching, buy the bling apple, if not, buy the generous ubuntu..i still prefer windows, they don't spoil me on digging all the games that i want..

avatar

Mechageo

So the rage in the other article was actually how everybody was feeling?

I thought they were just making a stink because of the mention of "Apple".

Interesting.

avatar

mothrpe

I think the most ridiculous part is that you can't use the OS on the hardware you want and have to buy a $2000 machine.

However!  I have spoke to Mac users who just got fed up with Windows issues and Hardware problems and went to Mac just to have simplicity and security.  I don't blame them, most people just want to get their work done.  However I tell them Ubuntu can accomplish the things they want and they don't even know what I'm talking about, hehe.

There is a huge market here for simple secure linux OS systems with distros like ubuntu, if someone can step up to the plate.

avatar

tapple

I'm not a fan of any of the OS's, but I use Windows beacuse I know it. As someone that never bothered to learn linux, I tried it because I needed to know it for school. Yes the installation and setup went smoother thatn anything else I'd used before. But as soon as I wanted to install a program, or update my nVidia drivers? All hell broke loose. And I know anyone on here that knows linux well is probably luaghing, but try explaining how to do these things to the "person that justs wants to get theri work done" that you decribed before. Anytime they need to do an update or install something that isn't just point and click to do, they'll be lost without hope. And just try to phone support that one. "Grandma, you need to log in as root and get super user rights." That'll go over well.

avatar

Keith E. Whisman

You know how difficult Linux is just imagine doing something outside the norm with Mac OS and you have the same work ahead of you. Have you ever heard of a kext? You have to SU and everything else in Mac OS as well. But only if you want to get your hands dirty and what self respecting PC fan doesn't want to get his hands dirty?

avatar

pepper_roni

apple is a dictatorship, its how they run there business and there PC's

untill they change that I will never buy a Mac

avatar

praack

it's a good OS, windoz has been emulating pieces since the early days as part of thier ongoing "innovation", and if linux was cohesive it would be the real threat.

Windows is prevalent because of marketing tactics- but we pay for it in spades. I have been around long enough to know and built enough boxes to know. windows will always be good enough but never quite baked right. windows will always be priced high and kept high throughout the whole lifecylcle. this is per microsoft direction- why else would you be paying the same for windows xp today that you payed at launch? for an EOL product not availbale in the retail channel?

yes ubuntu is nice- but linux is fragmnented so cannot challenge Microsoft, Apple has a great user interface but closed architecture- that is what holds it back- open the architecture which will increase buyers-which will increase software dev etc

So for the flamers out there- leave the murph alone-  as for me - what do I have - netbook is ubuntu, other three machinces are XP and a home server (open archecture) next laptop I get might be a mac though ;-)

avatar

Keith E. Whisman

The reason why I hate Mac OS is because it's closed and can only be installed legally on an Apple Product. I have said for many years that I would love to install Mac OS on my PC along side Windows and Linux but it's just still closed and requires some expertise to install OSX on a non Mac PC. So as long as Apple is going to be closed and snobbish like they are I will not purchase an apple product. Perhaps an Ipad or Ipod but not a desktop or laptop.

As an intelligent Mac hater, some of these problems really  aren't, or can be solved through free third-party software.  There are rainmeter-like programs for macs, and a whole lot of other utilities and tweaks you can get.  There are also some really nice freeware applications, like f.lux, which I have heard is much better on Macs.  I'm not sure what's happening with Steam coming to Mac, but the no gaming thing may be a thing of the past soon.

avatar

Ntldr

Did you read the article or did you just browse over the big bold letters on the page?  I mean really he said no gaming but if you would have read the paragraph under it he started with,

"This one deserves an asterisk by the name, for there are indeed a number
of games you can play on OSX."

He then goes on to clarify that Mac hardware is not suited to high end gaming, ie. "It failed the Crysis test"  Now Crysis may be the bench mark in some peoples eyes but I have played a few different games on Macs, PCs, and Linux boxes in my experience and my friends that tried my lab that I had set up it went PC, Linux, and Mac.  Some wouldn't even try on Mac because of previous bad experiences.  Some of them even rated it Linux, PC, and Mac.  but about 70-80% of the people in my group said PC is top on gaming.

AETAaAS

The lack of hardware customization kinda hit it for me... I've used the same basic system for a while now, an AM2+ mobo with a Phenom 9850 initially and now a Phenom II 940. And even more graphic cards than that. A 8800GT, X1800XT and now a 260GTX.

On PCs, you can mix and match what you want. Want Blu-Ray? RAID? Two opticals for Disc to Disc copying? SLI or Crossfire? Throw in some cards for USB 3.0, eSATA or expanded sound! If your pockets are deep enough, you can have whatever you want. And by not buying a Mac, I'm sure you have more than a couple coins to rub together. :p

I feel like giving up on this question. Some people just don't want to understand that ultimately windows based PCs are better in the workplace due to their already widespread use.  As far as using a Mac at home thats up to personal preference, no right or wrong answer.

avatar

COMMANDER_COOK

Ubuntu is better for home, not mac.

The securty is correct. I did a research paper on mac vs pc and found that most securtiy experts would prefer windows over mac due to the security flaws that mac has. One was like I would choose IE over safarie and Firefox over IE. Its that simple.
