Keep in mind that leaving the iPhone on during takeoff is against airline policy, so please DO NOT try this yourself, unless you want to risk getting yelled at by a flight attendant (or even thrown off your flight).

In the paragraph under the photo of the book with whats acceptable about 10000 feet, it says:
On our return trip to San Francisco, however, we thought it would be
smarter to start up the Maps application before the phone had taken off.Shouldn't it say :before the plane takes off?

yeah those flight regulations are fubar, I was recently on an airtan flight and the stewardess yelled at me for having my mp3 player on during taxi.
also, why wouldn't the iphone let you install maps to an sd card in case you lose reception? I don't have an iphone does the iphone have an expansion slot?

I asked about the MP3 player thing once. The flight attendant I spoke to said that it was more a safety thing. In the unlikely event that you're in a takeoff or landing timeframe survivable accident, they don't want anyone to have headphone on so that all passengers will be able to hear instructio s from the crew.
Phones effecting airplanes

I work at an airport, and can tell you that the only phones that effect anything to do with the airplane are GSM/GPRS phones (CMDA doesn't effect aircraft operations) and from what the pilots have told me, all they hear is a ticking sound in their headset (like when you leave your phone near a computer speaker and you get a call or txtmsg)

yeah I remember mythbusters did some test like that and they said that only about 2% of phones would affect any systems and even then the phone would have to be about 2 feet from the system

Mythbusters did a test with one setup and one configuration. That can't be extrapolated to all planes in all configurations.
