Maximum PC's Geek Quiz 2009
We like you. We spend all year being nice to you—giving you the scoop on hardware, software, games, and news from the industry. We may not always be nice to companies or products, but we’re always nice to our readers.
Well, nearly always. You see, every year the editors at Maximum PC get together in a big room with no windows or doors or air and hash out a series of questions for our annual Geek Quiz. Some are easy. Some are not. Some might have you pulling out your hair in frustration (those are our favorites).
But we’re not doing this just to be cruel. See, if you do well, you get the satisfaction of showing us up, plus a standardized score that you can show people to prove how awesome you are. And if you don’t do so well, hey, you get to learn stuff! Looking up answers on your favorite search engine, by the way, is strictly verboten.
Mom jeans from Lands End; Zelda belt buckle from Hot Topic; Three Wolf Moon T-shirt from The Mountain Company; glasses from the Six Flags guy.
So, whip out those #2 pencils and that slide rule, step away from the Google, and get ready to prove your mettle.

Gnome, KDE and XFCE aren't Linux Desktop Environments at all. They are WINDOW MANAGERS and can be installed on ANY OS!
There, I am the BIGGEST geek! No Jobs v. Gates q's, no UNIX (MULTICS UNICS) q's??? More like lame anti-C (which still runs the latest OSes btw) OOP loving geek.

They are all Desktop Enviornments. Gnome is only for UNIX, and kde is for all os.
Close enough.

Half those questions weren't even "Geek" questions. Twitter? Seriously now.

4500/5000, not too bad. I think some of the application ones were garbage questions... Oh Well...

That's funny, I got Zombie Killer but I have never played Left 4 Dead. Does that mean they'll take it back?

The only one I'm sorry I missed was the 4870 shader units - I missed that they were asking about the X2. It's not so much of a "geek" quiz as it is a "do you read every single article and post that MaximumPC publishes" quiz.

So who is the geek in the picture anyway?

A lot of the questions were questions involving specific programs, like digsbe, synergy, left for dead, and what not. I got all of those right, but still, they were a bit biased questions. I knew the pie one! :-)

I am an "Enthusiast", 3300 of 5000. There were some oddball questions on there. I also chose wrong on a few and right as I clicked I realized I was choosing the wrong one. haha.

most of the questions weren't hard, but most of them you had to have experience with to know (i.e. The Left 4 Dead question, synergy question, digsby question, etc...)

I got 23/50, a score of "newbie"... come on, really? I certainly don't claim to be a tech expert, but those are really hard questions. I would think getting nearly half of them right would count for a little more. /cries

Wait, so SATA 6 isn't backwards compatible? If so, that's really stupid. Ig the hard drive industry needed a boost in sales lol.

It is backwards compatible. The question asked which of these is not true. So that was one of the choices that is true.

Damnit, enthusiast... 30/50
Looks like 1337Goose needs to hit the books to perhaps become a little more 1337...
