"Our public education system is actually getting worst..."

Ain't that the truth, baby?

I believe it's "worse."

I agree that part of what made Portal so great was that it had not been done before. Only for that reason, it was not as good as the first game, no. It was still the best game I had played in a long time, and the only game I have bought on release date (and played full price for) in at least 3 years...

"It could never be new again"

It should be pointed out that this isn't a flaw with Portal, this is a flaw with how games and movies and such are created.  An idea is floated, the product comes out.  If it does bad, it is junked.  If it does great, the producer attempts to build on that and extend the storyline.  This usually fails because all the discovery was done in the first installment, leaving just eye candy for the follow-on segments.

There are some titles that manage to break this trap.  Alien and Aliens (movies) come to mind.  The first set the stage with the alien, the second explanded on that with the company reps, the terraforming colony, the queen alien, the marines, etc.

I would argue that portal is one of those successful franchises. So far, the way it's gone is much like how you described Alien and Aliens. The first game had some closure and you learned basic details. The second game started off almost the same way, but once you...

*SPOILIERS AHEAD*

...get into the original Aperature laboratories with the '50s style logos, thru the '70s, where you find out that GLADoS is actually the artificially intelligent remains of Cave Johnson's assistant.

*OK I'M DONE SPOILING.*

I also liked the change in scenery in the first 3/4ths. I personally think that they put the scenery back to normal because they knew the story was following a similar path. I think Portal 2 was easily on par with Portal 1. Maybe not in the volume of the Meme's created, but in the creativity and cannonical resources created, yes.

Very good example. Especially since if you think about it, the Alien franchise reverted back into a series of progressively worse sequels after the initial success of Aliens.

I'm actually going to order that movie on blu-ray now....

Or games likes BF2 < BF3 in terms of graphics and gameplay. You're improving by not making the same mistake twice. ^^

I'd add Mass Effect 2 to the "sequel is better" list.  But I would have to agree with Thomas' comments on Portal 2.  I was a little shocked when I saw how high of scores it received from various gaming publications and websites.  Although a fine game, I didn't think it was deserving of the extreme accolades it was receiving.

Sequels like Mass Effect 2 are great because they add so much more. Not just more for the story, but gameplay-wise. There was change in how you played the game, making it an actual sequel, not the first game with more story (Call of Duty...)

Often, it is hard for a sequel to be better than it's original. I think there are only a few exceptions. Silent Hill 2 was better than the original. BloodRayne 2 was better than the original... But most of the time, the original is better.

Ok here's the thing. You're a communist. You live in a capitalist country, I bet you have never ever expierenced full blown communism in your entire life. Since you said you are going to college I'm assuming you're relativley young ( I could be wrong). Communism looks great on paper. People who deny that need to open their eyes. The truth is, it DOESN'T work. We've seen it happen so many times. You could say look at china. Well china isn't %100 communist as they think they are... The truth is, i understand you're political standpoint but it's been proven not to work.

That is because dictators give communism a bad name. If they followed it by the book... It would not look so bad as we seem to think.

avatar

But that's it. How can communist form without a dictator? I know the whole "democracy is the first step towards socialism" thing but how could you start a revolution without a dicatator? This is where communism is flawed and will probably never be fixed. I know people reading this will think that I'm probably some socialist or something like that. Im not, i just like to understand political points of view.

How is your lil communist fantasy going?

I am a proud communist. Proud to be progressive. How are you and your backwards friends George Bush, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan? Capitalism is the same as a monarchy... You should join the progressive side. The winning team... Beceause Sarah Palin's "Tea Party" is not going to grow any bigger.
