This is one of the best topics I have seen on the website in a very long time. You could get far beyond video games with this topic, though. I think most of us here are transhumanists on some small level, whether we realize it or not. I'd like to see you guys do a long feature story on Transhumanism, its implications, and how the PC ties in.

Ummm... no. Not that it's not an interesting topic, or that good points aren't raised, but quite honestly, I feel that MaxPC is ill-equipped to deal with so philosophical and controversial an issue -- one much more serious and far less concrete than the constantly touted Mac vs. PC...

You:"Look at me!  I am the all mighty and great thetechchild!  BOW DOWN BEFORE MY ULTIMATE WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE!!!  NO ONE besides me is justified or qualified in sharing his or her opinion regarding transhumanism because MY knowledge is ultimate, transcendent, and superior!  Mwahahahahahaha!  Bow down before my unending power and level of experience that is beyond human comprehension!  No one else's opinion can be relevant because everyone else is inferior to ME."

Seriously, what is your problem?  Everyone on planet earth is perfectly well equipped to discuss this topic, AND to develop a valid, sound, and intriguing argument based on it, because everyone is a RATIONALLY THINKING HUMAN BEING.  Given appropriate time, thought, and reflection, anyone can raise an effective argument based on transhumanism.  No prior knowledge of philosophy or controversial issues is needed.  My god man!  Get your fucking head out of the clouds!

"...everyone is a RATIONALLY THINKING HUMAN BEING."

That couldn't be farther from the truth. I'd love to see where you got this information.  Then again, I really don't want to see where you got this information.

"Given appropriate time, thought, and reflection, anyone can raise an effective argument based on transhumanism.  No prior knowledge of philosophy or controversial issues is needed."

I would have to have some 'idea' of what transhumanism is before raising an effective argument unless I'm the one making up what this concept is.

I am 50 now and know right from wrong. We didnt have very many computer games when I was young. Pin ball, air hockey, ping pong, pac man, and karate kicker were very popler then. I guest I turned out ok. My son grew-up playing grand theif auto and sometimes it think he acts out or has a twisted sence of morality from playing thoughs types of games so young. What I am saying is, kids are very inpressionable and that game developers should keep that in mind when writing games. I never heard of kids going to school and killing there classmates when I was in school. I like to play RPGs for fun now, even though some can be violent, but when its over I come back to the real world.

I agree with you to a certain extent.  But I don't like the notion of completely cutting children off from all that is evil.   Our society cannot afford to simply spoon feed our youth a bunch of prescribed bullshit that is aimed at turning them into wonderful and passionate human beings.  They MUST be exposed to forms of evil, to others' opinions, to wide ranges of different possibilities for their future.  We cannot cut them off from everything and put them in this world of perfection, rainbows, and sweetness.  They will never learn to be critical, to think out loud, and to change things and form their own opinions if this ever happens.

A violent video game or two here and there is fine in my opinion.  A controversial book with violence and/or sexual references is good for the little buggers!  They need to learn and expand and grow!!!  The sooner they start, the better!!!
