I too salivate when new tech comes out, and blows away old tech. But before i go out and spend near a thousand dollars or more on upgrades, i'm reminded of a old friend who is a very wise man, and more computer savy than me (and i'm pretty good, been my hobby for over 25 years).

 When he upgrades, his guideline is this: Does my current system no longer run the software i'm trying to run? Meaning has new software come out that just won't run, or new software is running at such a speed to be noticable and thus irrating. THATS when he upgrades.

 For most of us, the computers on our desk are more than enough processing power for years to come, even for the gamers. I'm willing to bet if you truely analzied what your doing, and using your computer for, you'll find your not even close to maxing out its capability. Therefore, a newer system, wouldn't yield you increased benifits. (unless you had marginal clock speed increases).

 The comptuer store manager who posted below summed it up pretty good: Most people who are told they have old stuff want new stuff, without the understanding that they don't NEED new stuff. That the old stuff they are using is more than enough power for their needs.

I've wanted one of those Core I-7 920 processors since the day they came out. Been salivating for it. But you know what, my Core 2 2.4 gig duel proccessor computer that i've had for 3 years now is still working just fine, running everything i need to run just fine. I've added more memory, and a better video card for the games, but thats it. The processor is still keeping up good. No need to go out and spend $600+ for hardware i don't need. And i expect it to be at least another year, perhaps more, before i finally reach that upgrade point.

 Try to keep that in mind when you think your I-7 920 is out of date now and useless. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

I pulled the trigger on a 920 today. I don't know if I'll need six cores in the future, but I'll have the option.

I've got a Micro Center near me, though, which influenced my decision. At $200, I don't think Lynnfield can match the price/performance of the 920.
