Contest Friday: Enter to Win PowerDirector 9!
Hey there future movie makers - we see you, hunched over your computer in the dark frantically trying to edit that brilliant video of your nephew practing 360's/boss' comedy performance at the local pub/girlfriend singing acoustic Lady Gaga with a mandolin. Wouldn't that be easier if you had some sweet software to work with? Say... Cyberlinks PowerDirector 9? Oh, it would?
Well then, aren't you in luck! We've got 3, count 'em 3, copies to give away. All you have to do is follow this link to our Facebook page, and leave us a comment with a how-to idea you'd like to see us cover and you're entered to win! We'll end the contest Monday, May 16th at 6:00pm PST, and pick three random winners - and those three lucky people (if they so choose) can write us a mini-review of how they like the software, and we'll publish it in an update. Prizes may be in the form of downloadable software/keys or physical media. Contest rules and regulations below (While we would love to extend the contest outside of the U.S., legal rules and regulations currently prohibit us from doing so; at this time the contest is only open to U.S. residents).

why facebook?
i hate facebook.
i dont like how when they change things they opt you in to it and make it a puzzle to opt out.
with all the privicy issues that facebook has had over the years why would a company want to get on there? thats like asking a fox to watch the hen house, eventually the chickens will be eaten.
i think companies are making big mistakes with everything that has been going on in the past few years to associate them selfs with facebook.
next contest that does not require facebook i am in, if not oh well.

You're not the only one. I too feel exactly this way! Just because a supermajority of FaceBook users do not care about their privacy, does not mean that great websites like Maximum PC should make things exclusive to that website. I think FaceBook is famous by iUsers with their MacBook. They seem to go together very well.
Can you believe that FaceBook keeps your photos forever... Even long after you are dead? Creeeeeeeeepy! Like Google, everything you do is recorded forever and ever. I stick to IXquick for search, ICQ for IM and my favorite Russian social networking website vKontakte. Plus, lets not forget that I use MaximumPC for my technology news.
I wish that there was a company that was truly independent of social networking. There is not a day that I am not stalked by FaceBook. Motoblur comes with FaceBook already installed and I can not remove it. I see FaceBook extentions on Blu-Ray players, TVs, and even my university's website! Can you believe that? There are even smart phones that come with an actual FaceBook button... Like really physical. I feel that FaceBook is actually a fad.
I think they should do this in FaceBook, "Enter to win a contest by going to MaximumPC.com and enrolling in our contest..." The day that happens, I bet MaximumPC's popularity will rise expotentially.

As for the others, I am not sure, but for myself I hate facebook for several reasons. I am not going to get into that here as that is for a different forum. I was just lodging my complaint of having to use facebook to enter a contest. You can google why people hate facebook if you so desire.
Thank you for making publish to facebook opt-in.

The software sounds good. The only reason I would go to Facebook.com would be to slap it silly

Since I am not in the US it is really of no matter to me, but I must complain about the facebook deal. If I was eligible to enter the contest I would find it cruel that I would have to use facebook to enter. I wonder how many people will not enter because they have to use facebook? I guess that is one way to alienate your readers.

I totally agree with you. Why can't they have the contest AT MaximumPC's official website. I don't do FaceBook either. I use Russia's number one social network vKontakte.ru! They could at least have the contest at multiple social networks, like Twitter or even MySpace. Seriously though, I want to be able to register for the contest at the official website, that is one way to make more people visit MaximumPC.com, and not visit FaceBook's annoying fan service. Like you, I too, feel completely alienated, and I am an avid reader on MaximumPC.com, and I even follow their tweets! Sigh...

Hmm, I wonder if there was a way to formally let Maximum PC know that we, the readers do not like the FaceBook features. I see the plug in all the time, and I always have to uncheck the "publish to FaceBook" button. It would be nice if they kept their social network feature completely seperate from the official site. They should advertise FaceBook users to visit MaximumPC.com instead of the other way around.

Hey Holly, I live in SI too.
You're a 'proud communist'? You're joking, right?
But you apparently love the Capitalist lifestyle, and all its goodies like computers and internet, huh?
Why don't you move to Cuba. You'll get a sack of rice and a couple of chickens. Livin' large the communist way!

What the???
Ooooookay, since when did communism had to do with technology? Communism has existed long before governments even started using computers!
You need to read more books. I have read Marxist books, and Leninist books. Any history book will show you the primary objective communism, which is to create a utopian society.
In a capitalist society, we like seeing people go homeless, hospitals privatized, and public schools shut down. It is all about greed. Money, money, money!
In a communist society, you may lose the right to vote, but there is soo much in return. Everyone gets free housing, free medical, and education is always FREE.
You should do a "google" search on Marism-Leninism. It is not as bad as you think. Don't forget, all of your fancy American jobs are going to Communist China, and even Vietnam!
Why troll on me? You should not say racist remarks about the people of Cuba. Not everyone in Cuba eats rice and chicken all the time. That is like saying every American is obese. Communist Cuba has a 99.8% literacy rate... I wish I can say the same thing about all of the greedy capitalist nations.

dont stress it holly all governments have their pluses and minuses.
its like people here in america still thinking christopher columbus discovered america, it has been proven over and over again that he did not. there are areas in the north eastern parts of america of viking settlements. there are maps that columbus had that shows the shores of north america.
and we are headed to communist society and our freedoms are being freely given away under the guise of protecting us. but enough of that rant.
just say no to facebook.

Wow, it is about time someone makes some sense here! So many people are just slow when it comes to history, and history is a lovely thing to research on, always.
I love how our president is a socialist... But tea-party people always stop real progress from ever being made, because they are stubborn and stuck to the monarchy times where Christopher Columbus discovered everything... The other side of the world... Outer Space, the future, and so on. L.O.L.! It is sad to see people not know their history though. Everything is one big theory to them.
I have to disagree with you about America becoming a communist society. Though our president may be socialist, we are far from communism. With websites like FaceBook, I say we are actually heading to a totalitarian society. Where privacy is non-existant. Where all of your information goes out to big brother. Camera's are everywhere, filming our every move, as computers record our activity. Sad, but true. I still have faith that we can follow Communism by the book, and not the way Stalin and Fidel Castro did. People need to be more open minded, but as long as we have tea party people who think capitalism can survive on their own, will truly lack education. Sad, but true.

true just think we are giving away our freedoms slowly under the guise of protecting us.
the smoking thing is the newest and dumbest. people had been smoking for hundreds of years. there is new research that shows that people who get cancer are predisposed to getting it and stopping smoking is not going to stop it. its in the genes.
i just cant see how people can set around and say ya smoking is bad so lets stop it. seems to me i hear more about drunk drivers killing people more then second hand smoke. i had a high school gf that was killed by a drunk driver. the other thing i think is funny is people are trying to get pot legalized, what about the second hand smoke from that? i dont know just think one day we will wake up and have no rights what so ever.

Definitely! It drives me insane how they are forcing the anti-smoking laws everywhere. My school just passed that law, which makes it the largest university system of the nation to be "smoke-free" but people will just smoke in their cars. There are a few students that are angry about it. I am on their side. I do not smoke frequently. Just once in a while. Second hand smoke does less harm than public drunkeness. Pot kills braincells but I am fine with people smoking just about anything. Cigarettes or blunts. It is our life, and our body. Every law passed is supposedly suppose to fight terrorism. I will not be surprised if we did wake up one day with no laws to protect us. I guess we have completed our first step to living in a totalitarian state.
