Comic-Con 2010: What I'm Lookin' Forward To
I was a nerd before I was a geek. I loved sci-fi, comics, and fantasy for decades before I realized I could get paid to review computer hardware. And I love Comic-Con, because it doesn’t have anything to do with computer hardware and has everything to do with the stuff I like in my spare time. There’s no way I’ll be able to hit everything I want to see in the three days I’ll be there, but thanks to
the handy scheduling app at the comic-con website, I'll give it my best shot. Here's what I'm looking forward to.
The Panels
The Kick-Ass panel was a breakout success last year.
Star Wars Day
Friday the 23rd is Star Wars Day, featuring panels, presentations, action figures, books, a trivia contest, stormtroopers, and several dozen Slave Leia costumes. Oh, and
a panel on the upcoming Star Wars MMO from BioWare. There will always be a place in my heart for Star Wars. Provided I can pretend that the prequels never existed.
Commander, tear this con apart until you've found those nerds!
Project Copernicus Possibly Revealed
Its code name is Copernicus, it’s from
Curt Schilling’s
game studio, and its creators include Todd McFarlane and R.A. Salvatore. I can only assume it’s not a Forgotten Realms/ Marvel Comics baseball crossover game, but what the hell is it? I don’t know, but I want it already. Unless it contains baseball, Drizzt Do’Urden, or Venom. I'd play that too, come to think of it. Anyway, there's
some sort of big reveal going on on Thursday the 22nd at 1:15.
This Copernicus concept art doesn't appear to represent either Boston or the Underdark, but we can't be too sure.
Free Schwag
Tote bags, posters, t-shirts, and other freebies. Comic-con veterans pack a spare duffel bag to schlep back the goods.
Expensive Schwag
Obscure comics? Used video games? Weird vinyl toys? Expensive (and sadly nonfunctional) ray guns? Comic-Con is a place to bring all your money and distribute it to people who make stuff that you like. I plan on buying a half-dozen shirts from
Topatoco alone.
Might we suggest livening up your living room with the severed heads of your enemies?
RiffTrax Live!
MST3K vets Michael J. Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy perform their color commentary live! It might not be
Space Mutiny, but I’ll be there.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Scott Pilgrim vs. Ramona Flowers' Evil Ex (Disk 1 of 7)
Comics
Turns out there are a lot of comic books here, even if they get lost in the shuffle.
RPG Stuff
From the huge vat of dice at the
Chessex booth to the Steve Jackson Games and Wizards of the Coast booths, I’m gonna nerd out. And search for the elusive perfect mini for my warforged invoker.
The Costumes
I friggin' love costumes, and though my Tusken Raider outfit is still years from completion (or even actually starting), it doesn't mean I can't enjoy the costumes, from the fully-animatronic to the barely-there. Be sure to hit up the Masquerade on Saturday if you want to be blown away. (You do).
Not pictured: The 10,000 other superheroes in attendance.
The Future Play booth
Okay, I'm biased. But a booth full of gaming rigs crammed with fun games? Glorious. We're booth #4445; come say hi. We'll have hands-on previews of upcoming games, some rad hardware, and probably an elephant.
There will not be an elephant.
So what are you looking forward to? Sound off in the comments.
