So an "app" is basically a website (amazon, ebay, bestbuy, etc) you must download and then browse around in. So I need to buy Win8, and not use the web browser, but download a website-app. Amazing.

wow, like 900 comments on here and only about 4 of them were alternate suggestions of apps!

There is nothing wrong with Windows 8, it is just different from windows 7. I have been using it for some time now and I like it just fine. I boot straight into the desktop using Start 8 pro; but even if I didn't it is just "1" mouse click to the desktop from the metro interface. Yahoo, has changed, Google has changed Apple has changed. There really is only a small learning curve for Windows 8. If you don't like it, well that's fine, but it doesn't make it bad. I use linux as well, didn't like it when ubuntu changed their interface either, but it still works, and I still use it. I am actually starting to appreciate the metro interface a little more now thay I have bought a Lumia 520 Wind phone 8. I had to learn to use "Android" and found things I liked and lots I didn't. Rather than call Google and all the other Android users stupid, I switched to something "I" like better. That doesn't make it better, but I like it better.

avatar

moko

its Microsoft trying to force us to use metro is the problem....yes you can choose...for now,but they want to change that

I like choice....even on my android I have a metro theme launcher to use sometimes....but its "my" choice....and I like to use different ones when I want...like just my picture I want ,and nothing else

windows phone has already forced people to have no personal homescreen/desktop.....windows 9 is next

I had to by a new laptop this spring after my W7 laptop fried. When I went to Best Buy the only new ones I could buy was W8 unless I want to pay $800.00 plus for a W7. After getting the new one home I found it annoying and frustrating. I was ready to fire it out of the window until I came across an app that saved me. It's called Classic Shell. Why don't you guys at MaxPC test it? You can have all your W7 or even XP menus back. It eliminates the Metro screen so you don't have to put up with the crap anymore. I love it. Since I can't post the link here just type Classic Shell into your search engine.

Number1tricker:
The moose is correct. They did an article about all the free & paid Windows 8 apps that bring back the start menu some time ago.

avatar

Bullwinkle J Moose

Been there, Done that...

Just go to the top of this page and type Classic Shell in the Maximum PC search box

avatar

John Pombrio

iFixit app is no longer found in the search engine. There is now a crappy UNofficial app instead.

avatar

PCWolf

The best App for Windows 8 is the one that uninstalls it.

avatar

Carlidan

Dude, if you don't like, don't use it. If you don't like the articles don't read them. No one is forcing you to use or read it. If you don't have anything constructive to say, don't say anything.

avatar

PCWolf

And you are being constructive by basically telling me that If I'm not brown nosing Windows 8, that I should stay quiet? wow, talk about Hypocrisy. Maybe you can find a Windows 8 App to help you with that.

avatar

Carlidan

I don't think you know the word Hypocrisy? What in my statement is hypocrisy? Should I get you a dictionary?

avatar

Scatter

Lets at least be honest with ourselves. These aren't articles, they're advertisements.

avatar

PCWolf

Correct. Windows 8 Ads.

avatar

Bullwinkle J Moose

Hey Carlidan,
If you don't have anything constructive to say, don't say anything

avatar

Scatter

Best Buy is one of the best Windows 8 apps?

That's says a lot...

avatar

bjoswald

Couldn't agree more.

Bullwinkle J Moose

My favorite Windows 8 App's are KillDisk and the Partition and Format App's in the Windows XP Installer

Did you even notice why Killdisk was needed after Windows 8 partitions prevented you from reinstalling XP with just the Partition and Format App's?

Probably not....
This isn't a new's site after all

Definition of Malware:
A Government Sponsored Spyware Platform that attempts to prevent you from ever installing XP again!

ummm...EUFI?

How can anyone use Windows XP today? It isn't exactly "down" with modern multi-core technology, is losing (lost) support for modern hardware and is clueless about any RAM past 4 GB.

I also didn't like the "phone home" crap in WinXP. Better than how it has been since Vista but it wasn't "cool" like Win 2000 was, where all you needed was a CD key and you were good to go, no need to tell M$ everything and pray that they deem you worthy of using their software.

avatar

Eagle70ss

Don't forget about the 64-bit editions of XP that can address 128 GB of ram I believe. These versions really got a bad wrap. I run Win XP x64 along with my Manjaro Linux install. Works great.

Definition of Annoyance:

Bullwinkle's rants. :)

avatar

bjoswald

No shit. I wish someone would ban him so we could go one Windows post without his tinfoil-hat/conspiracy-nut crap. He's almost as annoying as ghot was.

avatar

Bullwinkle J Moose

Ever read the news?
Funny how all that tinfoil-hat/conspiracy-nut crap came true isn't it?

I've been reading MaxPC since it was Boot. I find it odd how if MaxPC publishes anything related to Win8 or a product that some folks don't care for...it's a advertisement. That's BS. If MaxPC didn't cover things like Win8, apps, etc...it wouldn't be MaxPC. It's they're job to cover windows 8.

For example: I've noticed a lot of my clients now have Windows 8. I don't tell them that I won't work on their PC bc I don't like Win8, or that they should switch to 7. If that's what they use, that's what they use. My job is to fix their issue.

I tried Win8. I didnt hate it, but I don't like it. Metro does get in my way. But regardless of what I think, Win8 is the most current Windows OS and some folks (including MaxPC readers) use it.

That's just the way it is.

avatar

bjoswald

Hey, it's better than a "best screwdriver" review.

avatar

legionera

Yes. I am happy that you finally realized it. :) Now you can move to grade 3.

avatar

Ashton2091

Why the insult? Comments like that are one of the reasons why it's hard to have a intelligent conversation on this site. I always expected comments like that from IGN. But man I tell ya...MaxPC readers are getting pretty bad about it. Meh...Lol

avatar

legionera

You are talking obvious stuff. Move beyond that if you would like to find an intelligent audience here. Otherwise you will just feed the trolls.

Renegade Knight

This is one of the better sites for comments.

The Nook app is my favorite for reading magazines. I highly recommend it. I liked it so much that I moved all of my magazine subscriptions from Zinio to Nook. Of course, you can also get books too, which is handy.

Zinio was great on the Android platform, but the Windows 8 version is severely lacking in basic functionality. They don't even give you a way to manually archive magazines. Lame.

Bdiddytampa

I've been using Google Play for my mags recently on my N7, was wondering if there was a decent mag app for Win8. Have the Kindle app but haven't messed around with it yet, I'm only a week into my Win8 ownership so I'm still finding everything :-)

avatar

loud681

The remote desktop app is quite handy

avatar

RUSENSITIVESWEETNESS

I want an app that makes Steve Ballmer tap dance in a tuxedo across my screen, singing, PUUU IN AHH DAAA RIIIIIZZZ!!!

And another to fucking erase Metro. Another to restore the Start menu. Another to restore Aero. Another to sack the SOB who decided subscription software was going to work.

avatar

legionera

The more you mention Ballmer, the more I realize that you want his penis in your body.

WAIT! Nobody shall intervene in this homosexual romance!!

avatar

TheMissingPiece

You guys should put up the price of these apps next time. I was excited to download Pin Steam until I found out it cost $1.50. :(

avatar

Sinicalgeek

I would recommend using "SteamTiles" as it links to your Steam account which allows you to pin the game banners on the Windows modern UI screen with feed updates if you prefer them. Price = free ;)

Hope this helps.

avatar

jgottberg

When I first started reading your comment, I thought the price was going to be outrageous for an app... like $20 bucks or something but $1.50? If the app is useful in any kind of way, $1.50 isn't a bad deal at all.

Why did you necro this old story? Even our posts from November are back.

avatar

Justin.Kerr

We mentioned in the intro that we added 12 new app picks, and they are all placed up-front to save you time.

avatar

Am I to understand that the best Windows 8 apps are a bunch of apps that are available on every other platform out there. Oooo, an eBay app! Wow! :/ Seriously?

avatar

Renegade Knight

The eBay app actually is reasonably nice. It's the only windows Metro app I use.

avatar

dherrick12

I use NewsBento almost everyday. Great app to add to the list.

It allows you to link news sights to the app, and organize them similar to the start screen. For me I put tech sites in one column set in addition to news, finacial news, and sports in their own column sets. Each site has its own live tile within the app, pretty cool stuff.

Someone NEEDS to make an app of this:

Does anyone know of a good Win8 email app which checks POP email?

The current mail app doesn't do that, at least it didn't a few weeks ago, and running Outlook 2007 in what is really a touch-only environ.

avatar

big_montana

If you are looking for a Metro mail app, there are none yet, but Thunderbird works well on Win8.

avatar

zcpro

Simple! Uninstall Win8.....& Install a clean copy of Win7.

All your apps will look great on another idiots that using Win8 at work. USE YOUR PHONE AND/OR TABLET for apps.

windows 8 is an abomination!
