My oldest PC is faster-- an HP with a 533 MHz. CPU and 512 MB RAM (and a LCD).

Poor Interns. Why doesn't MPC just buy them those $299 Dell PCs?

poor bastards

my guess is...   that they figured out how to wire up two 16GB iPhone 3G's as SSD's in the world's first GPS-capable, 2.0MP, geotagging RAID array with native YouTube streaming.

or has that already been released somewhere previously?

i hurd it kan do auto-pwns 2. u pres a buttn n it pwns tha dood u play agnst insta-win.

Phew, that was fun...  Back to reality now!

Speculating is fun, though! :D

damn, you hit it right on the spot. phonesaber actually works too so when we shake the 30in. panel around it makes the awesome sound effects.

iz in ur case, juxtaposing ur brand loyalties

Too bad they couldn't have got an Engineering sample of Nehalem for this build with a X58 MB

I have a feeling the answer is "no", but I'm wondering if PC P&C will build a custom, power supply for anyone. I'd be more than happy to drop extra cash for such a thing.

sirphunkee

according to their site, they'll be happy to let you pony up extra for any of the following:

  • Additional current on any DC output
  • Custom cabling and connectors (both AC and DC)
  • Custom AC switches and receptacles
  • Custom input capacitors (maximum hold-up time)
  • Preload for +5VDC output (non-PC applications)
  • Remote sense (voltage regulation option)
  • Cooling fan upgrades (increase CFM and MTBF)
  • Ruggedization of circuitry (abnormal vibration)
  • Externally-adjustable voltages (component testing)

It's alot of fun to put out guesses about the hard drives for the build, but think about it.  If the manufacturer has not yet disclosed the hard drives to us then chances are the names we are spitballing into the air aren't going to be correct.  I mean, how can we guess that its a 1.5TB Seagate if we already know about it.  If the names have not been disclosed then we already know we don't know.  These are not supposed to be known to us yet so we can't possibly guess that it's a Velociraptor, 1.5 Seagate or any other HDD we know about simply because, we don't know about these HDD's yet.  I'm sure we will all be surprised and find them to be something spectacular, but if the names haven't been released yet then clearly any name we throw at them for HDD's already on the market is wrong.

I noticed the 2nd page, from the picture, i seems to be a  samsung hd103uj

avatar

natehamill

They are the Samsung 103uj's.  You can tell if you zoom in.  The question, though, is what will they use for their OS RAID array (assuming, of course, that these drives are going to be a RAID 5 array for the storage volume)?

"I make no promises, only sarcastic remarks."

avatar

TheMurph

That is correct.  As noted in the first parts write-up, we're using three Samsung 103UJ drives for the rig's primary storage.  As for what the OS boots off of...

avatar

natehamill

I'm guessing solid states in RAID 0 or RAID 5, unless MaximumPC decided to remove the Velociraptors from the heatsink-like trays and RAIDed them in custom cooling trays (because of the whole not-standard placed connectors thing).

Bender2000

Why can't the backplane for easy HDD access be mandatory for every case? Its 2008 for crying out loud!!

avatar

Bender2000

Has anyone seen a mod where they used hard lines on the water cooling set up? Sounds tricky but with chrome lines wouldn't it be way cool??

avatar

TheMurph

That sounds similar to what HP's done with its Voodoo-DNA-charged-whatever Omen system.

avatar

Bender2000

when can we expect a review of that system, I want it tested and verticized!

avatar

Russtynailz

Is it at all possible for me as a consumer to buy the blackbird case from HP without having to buy the whole System and strip outall the unwanted parts?

avatar

guoruiwu1994

I say these hard drives are 1.5TB Seagate ones.

avatar

OMG HEADSHOTT

Well we know theres two, and we know there fast. I bet everyone will be extremely suprised.

avatar

kamman

Hmmm....

-128 GB SSDs

-256 GB SSDs

-They DO look alot like raptors so 600 GB and/or 20,000 RPM Raptors

-1.5 TB 10,000/7,200 RPM drives

-1 TB 10,000 RPM HDD

-2 TB 7,200/10,00 RPM HDD

-hybird drive i.e. mix of SSD and HDD

-RAM Disks

-25,000 RPM drives

are my guesses

avatar

TheDuck

They are 10,000 RPM VelociRaptors Revison B

avatar

hifiaudio2

Intel's new SSD hard drives that they have promised will knock the socks off all other drives / ssds.

avatar

guoruiwu1994

About the things gordon is writing about on his notepad, i would say it is a diagram of the cooling and air pressure.

avatar

pellier

Hes trying to figure out how he can sneak a mac mini into the case

avatar

TheDuck

I am looking at this at 11:24 PM PST on Sunday, not 12:00 AM PST on Monday. Just to let you know.

Back on to the details... The case, to my belief, was the cause of the leaks, the tight space would prove
inevitable for it to be leak free. As for those HDDs, I am not going to keep my 'bet' on the VelociRaptor,
but am going to stick with WD as the manufactuer of those drives. I am 98.99% sure.

Anyway... great job on the machine, Maximum PC, it really did knock my socks off! Literally!

avatar

brafo96874

I just got my Dream Machine issue in the mail and the drives used are 2 Velociraptors in Raid 0 and 3 Samsung HD103UJ's in Raid 5.  I thought they were supposed to be super secret?

avatar

TheDuck

If read carefully, you will discover tha, yes, they are the Velociraptors! But the new Revision B. It seems WD asked MPC to keep the revision  secret, but they didn't! :)

avatar

pellier

i wish my socks were knock off-able

avatar

TheDuck

There is two ways to really knock your socks off:

1) Get really, really huge socks and then swing your feet wildly.

                                        --or--

2) Use one of your feet to remove one sock from your foot, then throw it, then
follow the same steps with the other foot!

                                     --or--

3) Put it on halfway, then swing your feet
