if computers were touch screen from the get-go, do you think people would be doing backflips for wireless mice?

I am sick of exclusive  phones.  With every carrier holding people in with 2-year contracts, why so many exclusives?  Is it just to piss people off?

Well, I think it is several things.  1) Cultural.  In Europe, I don't think there's any multi-year contracts like that.   On the other hand, there's no subsidized phones to speak of either (you're paying full price).   People in the US don't usually want to pay $700 for a phone.  Companies that subsidized phones aren't really giving you a cheap phone.  It's just that the $700 price tag is spread out among a couple years.  2) Technical - If you are a manufacturer, and you just have one company you are dealing with, you cut down a lot of the technical issues since you have one source to work with and their network should be similar in tech.  If you work with different carriers, that's no longer the case.  3) Monetary - if you are a carrier and you can lock a popular phone to your service, you'll get more people buying into your service.  Carriers aren't out to make life easier for you, they're out to make money.
