20 Must-Have Geek Ringtones and Text Message Alerts (And 10 to Avoid!)

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

10. Post Beep

System builders are all-too familiar with this sound. It’s a stress-relieving chime that lets you know your computer has successfully booted. We’re simple folk, and that’s all the reassurance we need in our lives.

9. Price is Right (Fail Horn)

Always funny when it happens to someone else (we've long given up on our attempts to make it on the show), the fail horn alerts contestants that they've failed a price-guessing game on The Price is Right. No jet ski’s or washing machine for you, mr. college student/generic retiree/suited-up serviceman!

8. Murloc Gurgle

Love it or hate it, few sounds are more recognizeable to the 12 million players of World of Warcraft than the eerie gurgle of the Murloc. Short, fishy, full of teeth, and with the propensity to swarm unlucky adventurers, Murlocs inhabit the coasts of Azeroth's rivers, ponds, and oceans. Their trademark burbling yell spells doom to nooblings and easy fodder for experienced adventurers, and are sure to get a reaction. It's the ultimate geeky ringtone - obscure enough to confuse the average human, yet familiar enough to be an automatic 'in' with many gamers.

7. Wookie Growl

Every time Chewbacca growls in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, he's actually saying "Hey guys, why didn't I get a medal for blowing up the Death Star?"

Download the ringtone here: http://www.mediafire.com/?gyy2zwyzyhh

6. Zelda Chest Opening Chime

Like the classic Skinner machine, 8-bit videogame classics rewarded you every time your on-screen avatar succeeded. Unlike the Skinner machine, Zelda rewarded you with a money shot of the loot (held aloft by a triumphant Link) and this timeless, uber-hooky 3 second mini-masterpiece. Put this on your phone and you'll get that "I won!" rush, every single time you get a text.

Download the ringtone here: http://www.mediafire.com/?8sm54s7rsde

5. KITT

Forget the Hoff and that snooty English dude. Remember the sweet, supercomputer-powered Trans-Am, with it's signature "whoom... whoom" scanning noise. True, that 1984 Trans-Am isn't as lustworthy today, and we don't have a sentient supercomputer buddy in my trunk, but everyone around me knows that we know what the Knight Rider score is, every time we get a text message.

Download the ringtone here: http://www.mediafire.com/?bdnsnwzmafj

4. Lightsaber Swoosh

Force, Schwartz, midichlorians, mojo, or whatever you want to call it -- setting your text message alert to a light saber swoosh lets the world know that you're packing.

Download the ringtone here: http://www.mediafire.com/?1ni2wmxxvdl

3. Battlestar Galactica Cylon

The hypnotic humming of a Cylon's red eye is both soothing and ominous -- these robots are out to kill you, you know. And even if modern cylons look like supermodels, we're still fans of the old centurion model that didn’t waste time with sleeper agents or psychological warfare. They just wanted to pulverize some meat bags.

Download the ringtone here: http://www.mediafire.com/?mgn3mh3xtln

2. Metal Gear Solid Codec Alert

"Snake...snakeeee!" Metal Gear Solid's codec lets you pretend that Otacon is paging you to give you some crucial recon data on the building you're infiltrating. Just make sure you're locked into the 141.12 frequency. Use this text message alert in Akihabara and otaku will nod their heads with approval.

Download the ringtone here: http://www.mediafire.com/?8jftnbnsbvd

1. Star Trek Communicator

You may think your cellphone is more technologically advanced than a classic Star Trek communicator, but can your iPhone broadcast on subspace channels or break through atmospheric interference to contact orbiting starships? We didn't think so. Pay homage to the grandaddy of all cellphones and get this chime installed right away!

Download the ringtone here: http://www.mediafire.com/?deiviwymtcb

avatarBut,but, but?!

Aww! The Halo theme overrated? Why is it cool to dis Halo these days? I dig it, but I guess I am a sucker for epic scores. Maybe that is why I like Beethoven more than Bach.

avatarThis is probably on the "Avoid" list...

but I can't help myself. And frankly, everyone that hears it loves it.

For my SMS, I currently have "Mail, m..f..!" from Eurotrip.

I'm as big a Zelda, Futurama, Firefly and Star Wars fan as anyone (well, maybe not Star Wars). But that one makes me giggle every time. And I've had the damn ringtone for 2 years and on 3 different HTC phones. I thought I'd get tired of it after 6 months but every time I consider changing it, I can't find a suitable alternative.

As for my current ringtone; it's from the brilliant but underrated Boondocks: "Homies Over Hoes" by Gangstalicious. The problem is that no one gets it because way too few of my friends actually watch this show. It needs some primetime TV love.

avatar1. Apple startup

1. Apple startup chime

Can't you read? We're Maximum PC.

Wow it's about time somebody at MaxPC make this statement. I've been wondering over the past month or so.

And where is the PODCAST? You guys are just getting lazy. I have nothing to listen to as I lounge around the house all day. I actually have to listen to my kids. Please get up and get us a podcast for the love of god.

avatarJust for that, we're not

Just for that, we're not doing a podcast this week either.

Also, the Apple Chime was in the list of tones to be avoided... AVOIDED!

avatarHypocrite much?

you post that the apple startup tone is the #1 to avoid, and yet the phone you show at the beginning of the article is an iPhone????

avatarNice article

I was looking for the CTU ringtone to put on my Sony W810i -- I had it on a previous phone but it broke down. The Gem in this article was the Price is Right (fail horn) ringtone. . . That'll be my personalized ringtone for certain individuals on my phonebook.  I was kinda bummed out that the Transformation sound effect from  Transformers (80s cartoon) didn't make the cut.  It has been my text message alert for a while now.

avatarNow what do I do?

I got them all saved, but how do i put them onto my phone, the only way i can think of to get them so i can use them as ringtones is to use the record on my phone while its playing and thats a pain, is there any way to just send them to my phone or I have a micro SD card and i can use it to transfer but i've never been able to get my stuff on it to use as a ringtone.

So anyone know how to put them on?

Login or register to post comments
avatarThe only two ways I know are...

Bluetooth or USB. If your phone doesn't have bluetooth or USB capabilites, then there's not really any 'good' or easy way to transfer them to your phone from your computer.

----

Fanboys are annoying. I like to get the most performance per dollar possible and that's all there is to it. Why pay $600 or more for something that'll be $300 or less in 6-9 months? Doesn't make sense. Just be patient.

avatarwell I have...

Bluetooth on my computer but it only works to hook things up and i haven't figured out how to send things to my phone from it, and my phone has bluetooth, but again i dont know how to connect the two, and i dont have a usb cable that fits into my phone, i know they have them and i could get one but i live in a small town and the only electronic place within 120 miles is a radio shack and they dont have it so i would have to buy one off line... is there anyway to use my microSD card?

Login or register to post comments
avatarFive ways and counting...

Sorry about the lack of info. There are actually four ways I know of that should work (other than yours about the microSD card).

1.) Bluetooth (read manual for your bluetooth device on your computer an/or your phone for how transfers work)

2.) USB (should be super easy)

3.) Text Message/Email your phone from your computer (3rd party software may be required for either/both of these methods)

4.) Navigate to download link's url on your phone's (internet) browser

5.) microSD (or other flash memory standard). Use a card reader on your computer (if you have one) to transfer the files onto just like any other hard drive, mp3 player, etc. Phone should recognize the *.mp3 files once memory card is placed back into phone.

If any other methods work please reply. Thank you.
