My HTC one has 2 amplifiers and an infrared remote control, so perhaps 3 of the items mentioned wouldn't be of use to me? Most importantly the S3 pictured (oops, I mean S4, sorry they're almost the same d*mn phone, I get them mixed up :P ). Trolling aside, both are great phones, but maybe a little more love for the One, eh guys? Then again, can't please 'em all, right?

Paul_Lilly

The HTC One got an honorable mention, and was also recommended in our Mother's Day feature. Just trying to mix it up a bit. :)

Ghost XFX

Nice pic. As soon as I saw it, I suddenly heard the theme to Shaft playing in the background, as oppose to Deep Space Nine...

avatar

vrmlbasic

How did that picture evoke Shaft in your mind?

While the Voyager theme was superior, IMO, the DS9 theme wasn't bad; it's better than the ToS theme by far.

Ghost XFX

Because it's pimping! Think of all the big boob nerdy babes you could snatch up with that robe. Pardon me while I drool....

I also think we need Gordon to pitch his recommendation for the best fathers day flashlight.

The best flashlights use Cree Leds

1600 Lumen Cree XM-L headlight or flashlight for around $20

My "old" Cree headlights were 180 Lumens at 3 watts and 120 Lumens at 1 watt

Just shop for the lowest price Cree XM-L flashlight or headlight

They make the best Leds (Highest Lumens available and the most efficient)

Cree's are now Pure white at around 5000 Kelvin so they dont give you blue light (much easier on the eyes)

Check out the 9 Watt Cree 5000 Kelvin bulbs at home depot if you need new video lights for the podcast

Each 9 watt bulb is equal to a 60 watt incandescent and because they can be used as ordinary bulbs in the home, you are not paying for a separate set of video lights

A single 1300 Lumen LED Video panel at Cowboy studio is about $255
You can get over 3 times the light output with 12 cree bulbs for the same price including 3 power strips and 12 bulb to AC adapters

I can get 4 cree bulbs on a 7 outlet power strips with 15 foot ac cord

7 outlet power strip with 15 foot cord = $18 Walmart
4 bulb to ac adapters = $4 walmart
9 watt cree bulb = about $15 each with tax at home depot

Total cost $82 for 3200 Lumens of pure white video light
vs $255 minimum for 3300 Lumens on a much larger led panel light @ cowboy studio using older tech

By "headlight" do you mean: a flashlight that you wear on your head, or the light-emitters on the front of your car?

I'm thinking about the Cree lights as the white LEDs that I have are more "spot" lights than omnidirectional. The "only at homedepot & only via online ordering" situation is stopping me, as are the reviews that the Cree lights are the exact opposite of mine: while mine emit all their light from the top, the Cree bulbs supposedly have a "dark spot" at their top as no LED within points at them. What say ye to that lol?

avatar

Bullwinkle J Moose

Yes, I mean a light you wear on your head

You will never notice a dark spot on the home depot cree bulbs unless you look directly at the bulb

They are the best video lights you will find at that price range and nothing else is as efficient or has a longer warranty (10 years)

and are dimmable

You won't ever get a single XML to output 1600 lumens today, especially not at $20 - it's not physically possible.

So you are saying that everyone selling Cree flashlights is a liar?
LOL

1600 Lumen Cree Flashlight $16.98 @ Newegg

1600 Lumen Cree Headlight Starting at $12.90 (google it)
This one is $14.41 >

Yes, they are lying. I'm sure they're bright, though. As a rule, you can expect 10-15% of "Chinese" lumens to be actual lumens. You just can't drive an XML that hard. You'll need a triple XML if you want that brightness. Search for Trustfire TR-J18 or SkyRay King.

Bullwinkle J Moose

That is so sad if ALL the U.S. sellers are lying

How the hell does anyone know what they are buying if that is the case?

and who will stop them?

Obama?

google nanolight

avatar

Bullwinkle J Moose

If its not a Cree then I'm not interested

Cree is the INTEL of the lighting Industry

AND you can buy them TODAY!!!!

avatar

The Mac

just do it, they are interesting...

avatar

Bullwinkle J Moose

I googled it

Still Not interested in Joe's brand lighting systems

The only tech right now that may be more efficient than Cree LED's is the Bridgelux line of solid state lighting

I believe this is a homemade Bridglux Flashlight >

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jdpP46jx1Q

They are listed on Ebay and other places as LED's but they are not

Bridglux is a different technology entirely and they do not sell complete lighting solutions (Assembly Required)

Very Interesting though

avatar

The Mac

Bridgelux is LED.

They are called COB (chip on board) solutions

While cree manufactures individual LEDS, Bridgelux creates arrays on a single chip.

avatar

Bullwinkle J Moose

I stand corrected

Some of the earlier Youtube videos made it sound like a completely different tech than LED

avatar

The Mac

They are still pretty intersting though because you can create flushmount potlight like solutions rather than carving holes to recess regular lighting solutions.

or large lighting panels - sort of star trekie...

captainjack

I can vouch for the insect zapper. That thing is awesomely effective.

TheMissingPiece

That's a Galaxy S3. ;)

avatar

bandeezee

Nope, sorry, that is an S4. You can tell by how close the screen is to the home button. The S4 looks almost identical to the S3, they just increased the screen size a bit (hence the screen is closer to the home button).

Also, the S4 seems to have an extra hole to the left of the top speaker (extra sensor maybe?).
