First,  I agree that Android seems better overall on app user interface, and experience. That said I have not used one extensively yet, but am about to.  I can say this there is a simple elegance to iphone ui that I think that appeals to many people and deserves to be acknowledged.

To all those saying iphone battery life is better or ok.  I can say that the iphone for most users I know, and none of these people are using video and music players, just email and face book and occasional browser, are getting at best 12 hours.  In fact more than half of the iphone people I know have purchased (gasp!)  the ugly rubber case that has additional battery hidden in it.  Whose fantasy is it that the Iphone does not need a replaceable battery?  Frankly I am surprised because it is another way for Apple to gouge you.  I am surprised they dont charge you extra for the first battery (see next point).

Secondly, what sheep we are to accept the iphone that makes you by everything as an extra $ add on including the freaking power adapter!  Come on you gotta give us a real power cord. Can we say "greedy bastard."

Third, Seriously, the FTC, FCC, state attorney general, whoever has got to stop AT&T and their add campaign on the fastest network.  It could be if I could every get a connection.  What did they do test by sitting on top a cell tower and a dedicated connection?

Number three is by far the worst problem.  It does not matter how good/great your device or how much you pay for service or the equipment if the network cannot even support you. (I am in San Francisco area).

Bye bye AT&T (and Iphone).

For 1, 3, 6, and 8, JAILBREAK/UNLOCK. I can't stress this enough. Geeks/nerds/computer people/whatever don't need warranties! Besides, jailbreaking is fast and free!

Life is like a box of chocolates, except you can't eat life.

You know, warranties come in pretty damn handy when something stops working the way it should, due to no fault of your own...

And jailbreaking is quickly thwartded by connecting your iPod/iPhone/iPad/iCrap to iTunes, last I've heard.

  1. iPhones are not hobbled and fragmented by carrier-installed software - This is a huge issue for Android, won't get arguments from me here.
  2. iPhones tend to have better battery life than most Androids - Depends who you talk to, my girlfriends iphone lasts half a day. This is not 100% fact.
  3. iPhones tend to have much better build qualities (My iPhone is the first mobile I've ever had which has survived its 24 months intact) - Opinion, not a fact. I've had my working G1 since November of 2008.
  4. iPhones are more responsive. Androids are often just a wee bit less so. - Again, opinion not fact. My Incredible is BLAZING fast.
  5. iPhones have native integration with iTunes, iPods, etc - All Apple products... Android has integration with all Google products. Not everyone uses iTunes or an iPod. Or wants to HAVE to install iTunes to update their phone
  6. iPhones have multi-touch - So do Android phones.
  7. iPhones have hundreds of thousands of apps, including great games - I can agree here, Android is behind the curve on this one. But they're catching up. Plus ALOT of the apps in the apple appstore is crap. 5000 flashlights, or 10000 notepads.
  8. iPhones are less vulnerable to security attacks because Apple can kill shady developers' apps (for example, Flurry's activities in essentially stealing user data) - I dont know enough about this to comment on it, but I can see how this could be an issue.
  9. iPhones use C for app development as opposed to Java. C is better for many things, such as 3D gaming, whereas Java is a bit slow - The new JIT compiler in Froyo runs apps up to 5 times faster. Java is also alot more universal to developers than Objective - C and the new OpenGL stuff for Android will bring HD gaming on Android a LONG way.
  10. iPhone is an easier platform to sell to regular consumers because its simple. Android is not. This means that over the long run iPhone is the better candidate for developers to support natively, and so Android will be the also-ran phone with more ported/converted apps (And hence, slower) - You are correct, its very simple. A list of icons, you click on what you want, and boom there it is. But people like to be able to personalize their devices they just paid a few hundred bucks for. I love having twitter feeds, updated sports scores, and an email widget on my home screen. Its alot more efficient, its also slated to take over the mobile marketplace by 2013. So... I mean not everyone finds it too difficult

hey, i can do custom UIs with my jailbroken iphone, for instance, my
iphone looks like windows 7 (oh the irony). and i can turn on/off my 3g,BT,wifi change brightness with one swipe across the top. and lets not forget multitasking, tethering it has a file browser. i can also run emulators and contol nintendo emulators with a wiimote (<3 FF7 on iphone). i much prefer a jailbroken iphone to androi, but android does win agents un-jailbroken iOS.

avatar

Caboose

How do you use Nintendo emulators via Wiimote on your iPhone?

And the iPhone doesn't offer true multi-tasking. Only a select few apps are supported. Last time I checked, FF7 wasn't a Nintendo game, and unless there is a PS1 emulator that lets you play ISO's and has a full PS1 controller onscreen, I doubt very highly that you can play Final Fantasy 7 on your iPhone.

And for the love of god, put your posts through a spell check before you submit them!

I'm going to be really picky here, unless you have a video, I call fake on 3 out of the 4 pictures.

It's pretty damn easy to view a still image, and then take a picture and call it done.

Watch!

I'm playing Goldeneye N64 on my Android phone using a Wii classic controller! ZOMG!

i stumbled around a bit with my fingers because i was looking through the lcd screen and the lag threw me off, not the best video, but it will get my point across.

Nice video. The SNES gameplay looked smooth, but FF7 looked very choppy compared to standard play. Does sound work?

FF7 is a little choppy but playable, and the sound on some games work, but not others. the playstation may be old, but it was powerfull.

This entire thread is cracking me up, some of you sound like you have never touched an Android phone, the some of you sound like you have never touched an iPhone, yet you all have a lot to say about both.

I have an iPhone and a Nexus one sitting in front of me now. Some how I feel like when I use the iPhone I am taking a step backwards. When I got it I had to go home, install itunes, an unwanted app, connect it and do some crappy setup process. I felt that all of this was very unnecessary.  Also, when I install apps on my iPhone it immediately takes me back to my homescreen, then I have to go back to the app store to continue looking for a decent app that doesn't cost money. On my android phones I can just pick like 10 apps, they all install at once and it doesn't throw me back to my homescreen.Game son the N1 are fine, I have ex zues, raging thunder and a few other games, graphics are fast and crisp and freaking awesome. The contrast on the iphone makes the black look gray, black is black on my Nexus one. Everything loads faster on my android and with 2.2 it is finally just as responsive as the iphone. Oh yeah, and I can only install one app at a time on the iphone, takes forever, like 30 minutes to install 3 apps, where my Nexus one takes like 10 minutes to install 10 apps all at once. I am also overclocked, because we can do things to our phones without being called a threat to national security by the company owners. My phone plays flash and my battery still lasts all day. The battery on the iphone is pretty decent, but I have the option to go buy a second battery because the makers of the phone don't think that I am to stupid to change it myself.

My experience ont he iPhone is slow and cumbersome, my experience on the android is fast and flowing. I hold no ill will against apple, but there is no way anybody can tell me that an 800 mhz processor is going to perform better than a 998 mhz processor, that's just ridiculous and ignorant. The camera, the video, it is all better and faster. The iPhone OS is controlled and limited where android is uncontrolled and unlimited.

  1. Fragmentation is a myth
  2. My battery life is fine and I canbuy multiple batteries anytime I want
  3. I know people that have had the same windows phones for 3 or more years, aregument invalid.
  4. My N1 is way faster and more responsive than the iPhone, Use one before you make assumptions or listen to other peioples rumors
  5. iTunes sucks, Androiud has a native amazon app, and I can save the music anywhere unhindered.
  6. Androuid has multitouch
  7. Androids have thousonds of apps, and great ones at that, Logmein ignition on the apple app store, $30, Logmein ignition on the Android Market, Free
  8. That'sa myth, the linux shell is much more secure than any apple shell, this has been proven time and again.
  9. Java is a derivitive of C and the new 2.2 ont he nexus ones is far outperforming the iPhone
  10. Android is simple to use, there is nothing difficult about it. ANd developers are abandoning iPhone for Android in droves becouse of the obscure app approval process. Devs want freedom, Apple wants total control.

This iPhone in front of me is practically useless. my N1 does everything.

Who on here is planning on dumping their iPhone? I know I did, the Droid is much better. I even offset my cost by selling my used iPhone @ sellmyiphonetoday.com

They gave me enough money to nearly cover the entire cost of my Droid. It was awsome. I liked the iPhone when it first came out, but google really killed it. They got it right.

I am making the switch this week from my iPhone 3g to the Motorola Droid. I loved my iPhone when it first came out as well, but over time the novelty wore off, and the lack of standard features such as multitasking grew more and more annoying to live with.

Looking forward to switching to Android!

I get a chuckle from all the losers who post about a fanboy piece of trash article like this one.

You can call it marketing all you want, but people dont buy bad products in the millions. Apple fanboys are the first people to complain to Apple when they do something wrong. And they dont buy them if they are crap. Even fanboys have standards. There are Apple fanboys who will buy anything, and they attribute alot of first week sales, but where Apple really shines is selling a device through word of mouth. Only one guy at our office bought and ipad and a week later 10 more bought one after playing with it for a few hours. This does not happen unless people like it!

You losers read blog post written by 30 year old men who live at home in their parents basement masturbating and refreshing gizmodo every five minutes. You take lies and spread them as truth because of your inability to think for yourself. The inability to admit that something else is as good as what you have or possibly better. But if you like what you have and it fills all your needs then who gives a crap about which OS you think is better? You guys are the lowest piece of crap on the tech ladder. You are the people who can't stand people with an opinon different then yours.

I love my iPhone, but I also really liked my sister's new Android phone. It didn't wanna make me switch, but I can see why a lot of people like it. The problem comes from the fact that Android Fanbots think normal iPhone users care about their opinion, we don't. Nor should you care about the deficiencies we could point out on your OS. People like what they like. Andorid and iPhone OS will get better and better over the coming years, and that is good for both sides.

Neither the iPhone or Andoid OS can be better then one another.....ITS IMPOSSIBLE....Better is an opinon and not a state of fact.

To quote you,

@ lukewind

Your type are to blame for the past lost time. You are an "Evolutionary" not a "Revolutionary". Revolutionary advances of tech scare you, and you must try to damage anyone who jumps too far ahead of your beloved Apple.

First though, I must call you out on the most hilarious lie you push. Cult of Mac people do not complain to Apple... EVER. At least not in numbers that matter. The tiny numbers are easy to silence by deleting threads in the Apple forums, or to shout down in public forums by the rabid brainwashed followers... or by the most militant cult of mac tryhards who hack into any and all accounts of the people who dare speak out about Apple, then spend months trying to smear their reputations online, and in real life. I have lived ALL of these behaviours... and all because I DARE point out that OSX eats HDDs after approximately 12 months. I only complained about this after 12 HDDs across 6 separate Macs. Apple never fixed it, they did not have to, nor does the public know about it, because the cult of mac mob behaviour is so good at putting down descenters.

People like yourself have cost the average computer user tens of thousands of dollars over the past fifteen years, and have put back technology by anything between 5-20 years. Your FUD is similar to the FUD spread by cult of mac fanatics in the early 90's against the Amiga. A machine that outperformed Macs for 1/10th the price and had a whole stable of advanced features that have taken 15 years for Steve at Apple to copy (he has only copied 90% of the features so far, and has failed at implementing the features he has copied pretty miserably). A feature set that really did make the Amiga "BETTER" than the Mac. If it was not "BETTER", then why has Steve spent so much time, so much money in copying as many of them as possible? Ignorant cult of Mac people have spent the past decade screaming about what a genius Steve is, because he has invented so many advanced things for OSX... features that were not original, and hilariously features that cult of mac people used to claim were "USELESS" back when they were Amiga features. Back when they were not Mac feature, and unlikely to become Mac features for a decade or two.

Cult of mac tryhards used to claim that people who knew better were childish and/or losers back then. Cult of mac tryhards used to try to give the impression that they were more intelligent, had more experience, knew more about a subject they actually knew nothing about. Things like Multitasking... and Preemptive Multitasking... and parallel processing using graphics and sound coprocessors... and system wide automation systems... and Desktop Video (this subject was a whole new level of shrill lies, with cult of mac tryhards claiming that Amiga/Video Toaster graphics were created on Macs... in fact I heard them claim that Macs were used on every movie from T2 {SGI} to Jurassic Park {SGI mostly... Amiga for rendering grass}.

Cult of mac people never change it seems. Anything that their hardware can not do is worthless... until it can do it (at twice the price or more) and then Apple invented it... sorry Steves great big brain invented it, and got the happy oompaloompas at Apple to make it reality.

avatar

rjcouture1

Don't forget babylon 5 rendered with an amiga heck cable tv used amiga's channel 3 in my area would have the  desktop displayed with the icon for workbench 1.3 sure brings back memories. Just wish commodore didn't drop the ball and go out of business was similar to apple with proprietary chips but it was at the time years ahead of microsoft and unlike apple you could upgrade graphics, processor, and you could even upgrade the roms along with lots of other third-party offerings yup those were the good ol' computer wars of the day.

avatar

Caboose

“You losers read blog post written by 30 year old men who live at home in their parents basement masturbating and refreshing gizmodo every five minutes”

Those sound like bannable words almost…

"You take lies and spread them as truth because of your inability to think for yourself"

Uh huh, and what about all of the lies that Apple spews out, the “Mac Vs. PC” ads that Apple likes to tout around as fact, taking decade old information that has been fixed or is invalid as fact. What about all of the mindless Apple product owners who have bought iCrap just because it’s from Apple and so therefore, it must be good, despite the fact that there are far superior devices available from a variety of companies. You want to talk about taking lies and spreading them as truth and the inability to think for oneself? Try looking back at camp Apple for a change.

“You guys are the lowest piece of crap on the tech ladder. You are the people who can't stand people with an opinion different than yours.”

Kettle, I’d like you to meet Pot. I think you share something in common.

“Neither the iPhone or Android OS can be better than one another.....ITS IMPOSSIBLE....Better is an opinion and not a state of fact. “

Try telling that to the millions of raving Jobs followers.

Wow, good job taking half of what I said out of context so you culd post a reply that makes no sense.

What is this Apple crap that you speak of? If you are talking about the Newton, or maybe even Apple TV I would agree with you. But as far as I can tell Apple products are recieved and reviewed fairly well. They certainly have made bad decisions, but as of the last 10 years they have made mostly quality products. Where are these superior products you speak of? While I think the new Zune is nice, it has failed to make a strong market push, plus lets remember that all this is opinon, and I think we can all agree your opinon comes from a bias angle, which makes it even less credible then mine.

What kind of lies were the Apple Vs PC ads spitting out. Macs are more trouble free then the average PC. Windows 7 is a great step up for windows, but that doesnt change the fact that people on average have less trouble with Mac OSX then windows.  I am no Windows hater. I used windows since 3.1   I wouldnt even own a Mac now, but I won a Mac Pro over a year ago. I love all things tech, and if Apple made bad products they wouldn't sell past the raging fanboys. Hence your assertion is complete bunk!

Again you are just a Hater...lonlely and pathetic are you. You think you are cool because you don't like Apple. Yet I am willing to bet that you have never owned an Mac. Post a reply if you want, but I myself feel pathetic for even replying to your absurd post so I must go do some actual work, have fun not using your brain.

And I agree, what is the hatred towards the author of this article? What did they do to you? Kick your dog? Pee in your flowerbed? It seems that the entire reason you created an account on MaximumPC was to spread anger and hatred where it's not needed.

I feel a smidge of sadness towards you. Something in your past must have happened for you to act this hostile towards others.

This article listed 10 facts about Android.  I don't understand the ad hominem directed towards the author.  Couldn't you instead refute the list with reasons they don't matter or show where Apple has a superior trade-off?  What's sad is that you resort to fallacious argumentum ad populum reasoning for why Apple is better.  You seem rather callow and bitter for someone who claims to be objective.  In fact, you act rather like a fanboi.

AT&T has an Android phone? The Motorola Backflip is so painfully crippled by AT&T (good luck with the debranding) it cannot even be labeled "with Google" like every other Android phone is. The only way AT&T will likely subsidize a *real* Android phone is when they lose their iPhone exclusivity.

Hey gang,

I listen to a lot of long podcasts (30-60 minutes each) and love the fact that my iPod nano remembers where I paused it, even if I go listen to music for sixteen hours.  Can anybody comment on this regarding any Android phones?  I'd like to get a phone that will eliminate carrying two devices (phone, iPod) but this is a deal-breaker for me.

avatar

RichWP

Hi Titan,

I am a long time IPod / IPod touch user that converted over to Andriod as my primary device.  Like you, I listen to a lot of music and Podcasts.  I found that using 2 android applications works best for me:  BeyondPod (for PodCasts) and TuneWiki (Music).  I find that the features are much more focused, and far exceed what the IPod is currently capable of.

For example, BeyondPod manages all my Podcast subscriptions, automatically checking and downloading when new ones become available during the day (no ITunes required)...  It does also remember where you pause as you asked, in addition to a bunch of other nice little features and options.

TuneWiki  is a very cool music player...  Besides all the usual features, it also downloads and displays the lyrics of the song you are currenly listening to, and synchs them with the song progression.  It will also look for related videos for you on youtube, and has a host of 'social' features.

Both apps are free (ad-supported) but you can pay for ad-free.

Make the jump!  you won't regret it!

I have had the chance to use both but i decided on getting a G1 Android (1st Android phone out) as i wanted a QWERTY keyboard. I'm amazed the 3GS iphone still doesnt have widgets, multi functionality, doesnt remember your last setting, i can draw a picture go to home screen then 1 week later i press draw and my picture is STILL there without saving! ha get ur iphone to do that. Also 3GS iphone still doesnt have folders even though my old G1 does? WTF? Its only coming out now on 4G iphone..

My gf bought a new android motorola and wow I thought the OS was amazing on my phone, the new android OS is just awesome all of the small issues i had with my version are gone, its super fast, many more awesome widgets, more screens, its way above and beyond the iphone OS now.

My G1 is awesome but its 2 years are almost up and i can tell u now the next phone im getting is another Android (i couldnt live wihtout my widgets) but as for the hardware provider... thats up to MY discretion.

avatar

Wait,

The iPhone keyboard is a QWERTY keyboard?

Or do you mean a physical keyboard?

Wow apple fan boys are really on the defencive for this one huh...

Face it guys, the iPhone is dying. And it seems Apple and AT&T are doing everything they can, to let it happen.

avatar

I rarely stand up for fanboys, but your insertion about the iPhone dying has to be one of the most ignorant things I have ever heard. From now on we will all try and speak slowly so you can keep up with the rest of the group.

avatar

tadhgk

Wishful thinking.

What this is actually driven by is more the technical fraternity's bitch-fest at not having everything exactly as they would like it and literally willing themselves into thinking that Android will thus win. Android is a great OS in many ways, but thus far it is on the wrong side of consumer friendly, and its establishing its popularity through being free for partnerships.

What's wrong with that? Nothing at all.

Except that consumers look at phones at the device level rather than the OS level. As with many other tech wars (like browsers, for example) the regular Joe in the Street has never heard of Android, nor Symbian, nor Windows Mobile. "Phones" as a category, to them, means physical objects.

So what they see is:

  • Blackberry
  • Nokia
  • iPhone
  • Samsung
  • Sony Ericcson
  • HTC (maybe, if even)
  • Some carriers own-branded phones (like THREE in the UK)

They have no idea that many of these phones are interoperable and nobody's really done a compelling job of making them care at all about what OS they're using. What they do care about is whether it's a good phone, whether it does e-mail, whether it plays games and music and takes photos.

Apple's genius is in making a great phone (but anyone can do that, given time) that's hooked up to iPod and App Store and "there's an app for that".

So that's why it isn't dying, or anything close. The nerds may wish it so, but the nerds have also been wishing the death of Windows forever in favour of the "superior" Linux, but nobody cares. Android advocacy smacks way too much of the quaint self-reinforcing logic that advocates for Linux, and as has much the same set of flaws (i.e. large reality distortion fields).

All the NON-TECH savy people I know have heard of Android and most being iPhone users...want Android. Android is very well advertised.  I don't think the iPhone will be dying anytime soon. I DO think the competition has gotten interesting.  I would be fair to say that most people have no idea what windows mobile is...but android?  I guess that's the reason why Android phone makers have sold so well in the CONSUMER market.  For instance, does anyone remember the launch of the G1?

Well that would be correct if people saw apple and thought oh that's cool but they don't most people have verizon and will buy droids the only people that switched to at&t for the iphone were apple fanboys. So carrier/coverage is more important than what a phone looks like, I mean if you are in the market for a smart phone you know a little more than "OH pretty case and itunes". Android is appealing to a lot of people and is on every network hell some of the most computer illiterate people have droids.

I'd characterise that more as a Hobson's choice. Network coverage matters, but it's not a positive choice that users like to make, it's a pragmatic one of cost and coverage. In terms of product-want though, they want iPhones. That's where the iPod Touch market was born and why it's sold so well. It's the almost-iPhone. And similarly that's why the iPad is apparently the fastest-selling bit-of-tech in history (ish).

I think Apple is going to solve the US coverage issue soon by branching out to other networks. That's what they've done here in the UK and it's worked really well (you can get one on three different networks now).

I don't care how well it sells I could probably sell 2 million units of shit in a bag with an apple logo on it that doesn't make it good and with android it doesn't matter what carrier you are getting a quality phone OS (except at&t they don't have any good android phones).
