Daily News Brief: Was Vista's UAC Designed to Annoy?

Annoyed by Vista's UAC? Mission Accomplished!

Hate getting those 'Cancel or Allow' pop-ups? Come to find out UAC may have been designed to annoy all along! During a recent presentation, David Cross, a product unit manager who helped develop UAC, admitted "The reason we put UAC into the platform was to annoy users. I'm serious." According to Cross, Microsoft "needed to change the ecosystem" to convince ISVs to stop building applications that require administrative privileges to install and run. More here.

Do We Really Need a List for This?

MSNBC, and not a comic book or Lara Croft fan club forum, has posted who they think are the top 5 sexiest videogame characters. But before heading over to see who made the cut, do yourself a favor and first fire up the song Computer Love in the background. Ya, we just creeped ourselves out too.

Playstation 3 Gets a Makeover

We know what you're thinking: Blu-ray capabilities and modern gaming are tempting, but if only Sony's Playstation 3 console came in gunmetal grey, you'd be all over it like white on rice. Wish no more! Coinciding with Metal Gear Solid 4's June 12 release, Sony will offer the game as part of a "VERY, VERY Limited Edition bundle, which includes the console in gunmetal grey, the same one that sold out in a matter of moments in Japan. Detailed specs about the special edition console have not yet emerged.

New Minority Search Engine

Many have tried to take on Google in the search arena, and just as many have failed to topple the giant. But that hasn't stopped some from carving a niche out for themselves, and that's exactly what Barry Miller's IAC/InteractiveCorp intends to do. IAC's Rushmore Drive describes itself as "a first-of-its-kind search engine for the Black community," returning results purportedly more likely to interest African American surfers. Johnny Taylor, chief executive of Rushmore Drive, says the results are based on years of search data from IAC's Ask.com division.

AMD CTO Steps Down

And here we thought AMD's mass exodus among top brass had come to end. Boy were we wrong. Phil Hester, AMD's CTO, becomes the latest high level exec to leave the Sunnyvale based chip maker. Hester, who according to a company spokesman will not be replaced, leaves behind a company struggling to return to profitability. AMD recently announced plans to cut 10 percent of its workforce, but said Hester's departure isn't associated with the job reductions.

Stolen Military Gear Shows Up on Ebay, Craigslist

Yowzers! According to congressional investigators, stolen and sensitive U.S. military equipment has been appearing on online sales sites. Some of the items include F-14 fighter jet parts wanted by Iran and nuclear biological protective gear. Undercover investigators were able to snatch a dozen defense related items on Ebay and Craigslist dating back to January 2007, and said such items "could have been used directly against our troops and allies, or reverse engineered to develop counter measures or equivalent technologies." "naturally" long hair? I'm sorry but I couldn't help but laugh...I'm guessing you were born with it already long?

As for having difficulties with search engines...google and just about any other search engine out there has some keystrokes that help you narrow down your search if you would but look for them...everyone else has to do the same thing if they want to refine their search in a similar fashion.

Biased search engines are untrustworthy imo, it may not be what you want to look for, but what they feel you should be looking for.

It's not about sex or anything else. It's about the color of your skin. Why dedicate resorces to optimize a search engine for a people with only dark skin? This is completely different than searching for boxer shorts or jock straps. This is for one race of people. Race I mean breed as we are all from the same race. Last I heard we are all part of the Human Race.
But why is this ok? The video talks about putting people in touch with employers that are looking for people that LOOK like you. Now it's against the law to hire based on race, religeon and national origin. This is racist. I can't believe you can't see it. My wife just doesn't see it either. But notice that Jesse Jackson and the Rainbow coalition has sued, had jailed, and put alot of people out of work because of real or implied racism against black african americans. Why is it ok to be racist towards whites? I say this again. Although history is not nice to African Americans does it make it right to reverse the racism against whites? Why not unity? Is that not what the Hon. Rev Martin Luther King Jr wanted? I believe in his message.

Talcum X

Dittos to Kieth E. If we are every going to eliminate racism, then we have to eliminate anything that separates people by race or color, in referance in news, funds, awareness, and now search engines I guess. It will never stop until society as a whole makes it stop.

Every morning is the dawn of a new error.

It must be a slow news day over at MSNBC...

Well it's pretty much guaranteed that it'll be worth visiting for a laugh, for both blacks and everyone else.

I went to Rushmoredrive.com and found it to be very racist. What if somebody built a search engine that was specifically optimized for white people? That would be wrong and racist. So why is it ok for blacks?
I'm an white man. I am a US Army Veteran. My wife is African American. We have two children with a third on the way. Will there be a search engine optimized for people that are beautifully mixed?
Why is it ok to belong to a group that believes that white people were created by a mad scientist? I refer to the nation of Islam. But it's not ok to belong to the KKK? Why is it ok to hold Malcolm X as such a great man when all he really was was the black version of the grand wizard of the black KKK. The nation of Islam.

Does it make it ok because of History?

It would be an outrage to make a film glorifying the KKK. And I would be Offended. But it was ok the make a film on Malcolm X. A racist.

And as for game girls I have always been a little titillated by that girl from Unreal 2 The Awakening. She was hot. I actually had fantasies about her.

I haven't visited Rushmoredrive.com yet. But I do see a need for "speciality" search engines. You mentioned you are a Veteran. Would you not see a search engine or website especially for services geared to Veterans helpful? I wouldn't find such a search engine offensive, even though I don't vote and I'm neither for nor against the military.

How would you feel about a search engine geared towards men? Think it would be sexist? I wouldn't.

Maybe Rushmoredrive.com didn't quite execute the idea properly. I'll post again when I've visited the site.

Hate is not good coming from any race. I would NEVER be a part of NOI.

Not trying to be argumentative, so please don't take it that way.

BTW, my husband is white (Belgian). We can't have kids; I'm sure yours are very beautiful.

I like the idea. I always have a hard time finding hairstyle ideas for my naturally long hair.
