Ask the Doctor: DVD Backups
The March 2009 article about ripping DVDs was great. However, it left out the part about backing up one DVD movie to another disc. I never trust one copy to remain available when needed, though there seems to be some law of physics such that when I have two or more copies of the same thing around, I can always find both.

Another great tool that's free is DVD Decrypter, which has built in copyright elimination and you can rip an ISO to your hard disk. Combine that with the Microsoft Virtual CD-ROM tool (also free from Microsoft) which can be used to mount the ISO on a virtual CD/DVD drive. You can then watch the movie, from the ISO directly from your hard disk.

For a free alternative, you can use DVD Shrink to backup the DVD to your HDD. It's dead simple and even has an option to back up the disk as an ISO, which is nice in conjunction with ImgBurn, a free utility for burning ISOs onto CDs and DVDs. DVD Shrink can also remove extras and extra audio tracks to get the file size down, as well as transcoding the video to a lower quality, all useful if you're trying to fit a dual layer DVD onto a single layer DVD.

What he said.
DVD shrink is amazing. I make an iso of my dvd's, burn a copy and keep em in a box, then put the iso on an external with all my other movies.
