Akuatek Extreme FS92

Though the Akuatek looks like a run-of-the-mill heatsink/fan setup, it’s actually a water-cooler in the same vein as Cooler Master’s Aquagate Mini. The heatsink comes prefilled with water, which circulates throughout the device, aiding in cooling.

The problem, as you might have already surmised, is that there isn’t much water in a unit that lacks a reservoir and tubing. Though such a design simplifies installation, it hurts performance, making this cooler more of a downgrade than an upgrade.

Easily the most egregious feature of the Aquatek is that it’s secured to the CPU socket from underneath the mobo, for Socket 939 and LGA775. Screw that! We can’t remember the last time we had to remove the mobo to install a Socket 939 cooler.

Once installed, the Extreme FS92 cools just as well as the stock cooler, but it’s louder. There’s nothing interesting or compelling to see here. Move along please.

Month Reviewed: July 2006

+ AQUA: Intersting design; smallest water cooler we've seen.

- MUERTE: Must screw the device into the underside of the mobo; lackluster performance; noisy.

VERDICT: 4
