10 Ways to Fix Windows Phone 7

After using the Samsung Focus for 2 days and returning (and paying AT&T a restocking fee) it in disgust, I am continuously amazed at the review Gizmodo gave this horrible platform.

To be fair, it might have been -as another commenter mentioned- written by a 15 year old social network sycophant.  I definitely was not written or directed at anyone who uses their phone in a business environment or who has used the previous iterations of the Windows Mobile platforms.

No hardware encryption, so unless my company decides to lower the security on their exchange servers, I cannot use it for work e-mails.

No direct sync with my PC, so unless I want to drop my private domains (or upgrade all of them to exchange servers at $9.99/account/month) and go with either Google or a Windows Live account, I am stuck without my Outlook Calendar, Notes and Tasks (all of which my $49.99 Nokia syncs perfectly via Nokia PC Suite)

No Cut & Paste -there is no possible comment on this one-

I could go on and on. It amazes me that this article only talks about the infantile uses for a phone. I am counting down the days when we will see Paris Hilton and other airheads toting this phone around.

I dont even use twitter or flicker i think it is nice to allow people to choose what they want to install on the phone instead of making it mandatory. Plus MS just releases the OS with out any apps on it. It is up to the manufactures to decide what apps should be installed or not.

Seriously,

I think you guys are scraping the bottom of the barrel of journalism. 'Goddamn' is an unnecessary vulgarity in a technical article, which many people find people find offensive for religious reasons. I don't care how you talk in your personal life, but that's about as unprofessional as it gets as a writer. Sometimes I wonder if you guys have any journalists over the age of 15. I think I'm about done with Maximum PC... this magazine just isn't what it used to be.

MaximumMike

Sorry Maximum PC,

I just realized that this was a GizModo article. So, I guess you guys get a pass on this one. It's still very unprofessional journalism though.

I can't figure out what all the hate and 'don't waste our time' with these articles is. Dude, this is why we do read MPC and I check out the website. This is the reason I've been a loyal subscriber for, years. They grab the stuff I'm interested in with views from my perspective on things. The phone isn't out so why waste our time with this?! ARE YOU FREAKING SERIOUS?! I thought everyone else here lived for knowing the latest on tech before my senior citizen neighbors. Heck man if you thought they were wasting your time with this article, skip it, that is your right. I'm on the, keep giving me more tech info band wagon. I needs to know everything I can! Thanks for the acess to the article MPC. Keep it up.

Wish Black Berry would have been blasted when it came out with the first storm. Just because we are PC's does not mean we have to be enslaved to every Microsoft product out there we are already enslaved to Bill's OS and some his sorry excuse he calls a gaming system. I imagine the reader blasting Matt for being a Ifan is a MSFan boy. I'm thankful for the article with all the money for research and technology Microsoft has at it's fingertips the new phone should be able to turn the lights on in my house open my garage door and at the very least cloud with all things Microsoft in a seeming-less transition. Anything being released post Nov 2010 should have flash. You Tube mobile sucks on all platforms even my droid x with the big screen but the complaints about Windows Mobile are heard and already know not to spend my hard earn dollars on anything Microsoft until it is a year old.

when the first iPhone came out or the G1 in fact? Oh that's right a magazine titled Maximum Pc listing issues with a smartphone isn't very Maximum Pc! This article reads as if it's on an Apple fanboy's site and considering that windows phone 7 is still not available yet, why exactly is this article wasting Maximum pc reader's time? So in order to waste more time and to lessen my distain to where Maximum pc's article writing is losing sight toward it's readers, I offer my speculation toward windows phone since it doesn't matter what anyone thinks because IT'S NOT OUT YET!

This is my retort to Matt's list:

1. Get over it with multitasking. Windows mobile had true unlimited multitasking and it didn't make it any better than what iPhone calls multitasking! The only thing it does is make the phone very slow because users didn't know how to use a task manager. I even heard that none of these phones even have a task manager! And how long did it take iPhone to get multi tasking? 4 fucking years! and not even a blimp on this site about it! MS has already made plans for mulitasking and in a sense already have multitasking built in but left it for developers to decide how to use it. I'd rather have stability over rouge third party apps running in the background harming the functionality of my phone! develpers still need time to take advantage of the phone and MS needs to figure out how multi tasking should be implemented. I won't be suprised this feature update coming around next year and not 4 fucking years from now!

2. xbox live on winphone 7 is still a developers choice. Other than microsoft studios making a cross platform gaming experience which they do, it's really up to developers to do something about this. XNA is already availble for this phone and xbox. What exactly do you want MS to do? mandate hardware manufacturers to match xbox 360 hardware? Intel can't even do that on their laptop hardware let alone phone hadware? Do you want xbox games to suffer for a phone that hasn't reached version 1.5? Nice to know that you have the legistics thought out on this one.

3 & 4. This, I agree on. cloud based service needs cohesion. Infact the whole Zune experience is lacking compared to what you can get on a Zune HD. That being said MS has always stated that their will be no Zune phone and they made good with this promise. This is a smartphone not a Zune with phone features and MS has been in this business a lot longer than the media player business. The fact that it has Zune at all is entirely huge improvement over windows media player! What MS plans to do with Zune in the future is anybody's guess but intergration of Zune should be considered a plus not something to complain about! Also Shazam is an actual plugin for Zune on winphone which is an interesting choice on MS considering than MS has their own version built in to their Zune HD. Nice to know they are open to every developers on their os! How long did it take for google voice to be on iPhone?

As for mspoints, how do you supose they institute this while still making this service avalible for the kids that don't have or even need a smartphone. Microsoft points allows kids to have money without the need to have it to actually spend it. Your plan is asking every parent to allow their kids direct access their credit card without supervision. Are you nuts!?! I feel that the MSpoints is annoying but the last time I used it was 8 months ago because I haven't gotten the chance to refill it and I am fine with it. That extra step to convert money to mspoints keeps me from wasting cash I don't have and actually use the cash I have for food!

5. Marketplace will improve and hopefully better than what Apple's or Google's version. There is so much fragmentation to the other phones when it comes to apps, it's a crap shoot weather what app belongs to whatever hardware or version of os! MS marketplace for windows mobile has already showed that my phone shows me what will work for my phone and my phone only. With winphone 7, the strict mandate that MS already have on this os, chances are fragmentation won't even exist on this phone since OTA is already in effect since windows mobile. Differnce is winphone updates will work like Android updates instead of little patches.

6. This is when you are reaching for points. Youtube mobile is acutally better than their own apps and I'm sorry I didn't know MS makes the app. I thought Youtube needs to make that app for winphone?

7, 8, 9 &10. I supose you haven't seen the latest updates to xbox 360 and you are still using the same dashboard since first release? Intergration, upgrade, and updating is synonyms with MS! Without it, win xp wouldn't be the saving grace that made Vista look like a dog and for Vista to eventually become what MS intended it to be. Win 7 is pretty much win98se to Vista! You can't help but see that this phone will be what Windows is to the pc. For every update, will be a huge improvement from the last. Not incremental improvements but huge redesign and functionality! copy & paste, multitasking, twitter intergration is already planned for this phone starting next year and I must remind everyone IT"S NOT EVEN OUT YET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i agree with most of your list except the multitasking bit. i am hopeful that it will be a nice add on in the future (as well as the other updates that who knows when and if they will come), but considering how much of a bitchfest went on cause iphone didn't have it, the amount of time that has passed since at least some form of multitasking is now the norm...and how long this os has been in development, it seems like a fail to not have it off the bat. for many im sure they wont even notice, but after being used to the web os wonders, it would be a little more difficult for me to adjust to not having it. my main concern is with the resume time hang. really? if it goes into sleep all progress on the app is lost and it has to reload when the phone resumes?! unacceptable, completely unacceptable. while it may not be out yet, many people have already had substantial time with since most of the phones were announced a while ago. engagdget has even reviewed every single wp7 phone announced that will be released until the end of the year all over the globe. everyone is having similar conclusions so i dont think this list is to much of a stretch. i am hopeful it becomes a beheamoth. i like the look and the responsivess of the os, it just needs to be sweetened up from the looks of things

You need ridlin. Zanax. Or something to calm them nerves. First off, this is a Gizmodo article that MPC has brought to it's readers. Wanna complain, goto www.gizmodo.com and rant/troll there. Second, sure the phones not out yet, but neither are these so called important updates you keep spewing about. What if the phone doesn't sell well (hypothetically) and these updates never arrive? Then your huge rant was in vain. Dude seriously, read and enjoy. But honestly....how can you, yourself, vouch for a phone and it's updates when in fact you haven't even touched it? At least MPC and others have, so thier experience with this winmo OS is 100% more than yours.

I'm no prude but is the "goddamn" necessary Gizmodo? Unprofessional. It's not Cracked or The Onion.
