Web Access in Bahrain Restricted as Protests Grow
The world has maybe become a little hypersensitive to Internet blocking in the wake of the Egyptian incident. So it comes as no surprise that when traffic from the small nation of Bahrain began choking off, people took note. As protests in Bahrain increase in size and duration, data collected by Ann Arbor networks suggests large scale blocking of packets is taking place.
Unlike the Egyptian total shutdown, Bahrain seems to be filtering traffic to block only the content they find most worrisome. Traffic levels are as much as 20% below expected levels at this time. Fluctuations of this magnitude are usually only caused by natural disasters, or major global events. The Harvard OpenNet Initiative agrees with the findings saying they are consistent with reports from within the country.
