Rumor: Modern Warfare 3 Dev Duties Being Shared by Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer, and Raven
Infinity Ward's far from out, but it's certainly down a number of very important people – including former bosses Jason West and Vince Zampella. Under normal circumstances, that'd mean huffing, puffing, and delaying the game out of 2011 while everyone regroups, but this is Call of Duty we're talking about. Activision's precious lifeblood. Its bread and butter. And so, according to a report by the LA Times, the CODependant publisher's brought in a couple fresh faces to pick up the slack.
First up, there's Sledgehammer Games, who's been quietly hammering away at its own Call of Duty spin-off for quite a while. Apparently, that game will be put on the backburner while the developer lends a hand on Modern Warfare 3. As a result, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer are said to be “working closely” on Modern Warfare 3's single-player campaign -- which may or may not star a certain not-so-friendly Ghost.
Meanwhile, Raven Software – developer of 2009's Wolfenstein reboot and recent time-bender Singularity, among many others – is heading up the multiplayer half of the operation.
For now, Activision's opted to neither confirm nor deny any of it, but has said that it hopes to announce further details in the “near future.”
If it is true, though, it's certainly not Activision's finest moment. The whole thing reeks of frightened desperation, serving as a cautionary tale about what happens when you put all your golden eggs in one brittle basket. Call of Duty's certainly a phenomenon, but it won't stay that way forever. If Activision has so little faith in its other franchises that Call of Duty can't be allowed to miss even a single beat, then things are going to get pretty darn ugly when gamers start moving on and the franchise loses its record-breaking sheen.

I just hope MW3 is not rushed like Call of Duty Black Ops was. Has anyone heard anything new, the only information I could find on Modern Warfare 3 http://mwarfare3.com. Anyone know of any other places?

Of course they wouldn't want a cash cow like COD to be late because they know all the sheep are waiting to buy the next title. Seriously, take some time and create a quality game that isn't the same as the previous one. Companies like Blizzard and BioWare take their time and produce high quality games that Activision could only dream of matching. Yes, I know Blizzard is now officially owned by Activision but they still retain their own identity and have yet to show any lack of quality.

This series is far from being beaten to death.. Mw2 was complete garbage. But who knows, maybe they will finally get this one right, but I doubt it.

"If Activision has so little faith in its other franchises that Call of Duty can't be allowed to miss even a single beat, then things are going to get pretty darn ugly when gamers start moving on and the franchise loses its record-breaking sheen."
How does this compute? A major player in the video game industry decides to marshal resources to ensure the on-time delivery of their game, and you make a statement like this? Look, Activision may or may not be your favorite company, but I for one feel that they are doing the responsible thing here in doing everything that they can to deliver this game.
If the expectation of game creation is that it will be over time and over budget, what does that say about the industry? If it is a bad thing to go against the prevailing trend of lengthy dev times, slow production, and poor gameplay, to put out a quality game within a decent time frame - without playing the vapor-ware game, then the industry is not going to and cannot succeed. Big period there at the end.
And just to polish the apple, your final comment about gamers moving on when the current iteration of COD gets old is the EXACT REASON that Activision is trying to get this game out on time. Sheesh.

Like it matters, As long as it says CoD in the title it will sell. Even if's the SAME game with the SAME maps plus a couple new ones and a new SP campaign it'll break records. They don't even have to advertise. Just mention CoD MW3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10 is coming out and It. Will. Sell. And if the day comes that it doesn't. They'll have billions of pocket money and Blizzard to milk.

Game companies that lose the ability to challenge the expectations of gamers and the industry, soon have nothing left to milk but their excuses.

Until they allow dedicated servers I am done with the CoD series. Black Ops multiplayer was basically the same as MW2 multiplayer.

Loved the single player, but without the option of dedicated servers I have limited my multiplayer time to playing COD MW instead. Hate to say it, but its true.
