Personally I think downloading the software is wrong... but I don't really see that as the issue here. I'm not going to try and take a moral stand point and if I did I would be a hypocrite. I'm older now, I own my own business, I work hard, I have a different view of things and I wouldn't download a leaked game now, but would I in the past? Well Yes. So OK, morality aside, I see this as an issue of loyalty and respect. Something unfortunate happened and you are asking the general populace to cut you a break, have some understanding, and show some loyalty - to an industry that has been treating those very same people like the red-headed bastard step child you hate so much you don't even have the decency to hide the sneer on your face when they walk in the room.

This is an industry like no other. Name one other product or industry that knowingly releases bad or broken products and then expects it's consumer base to either: Go to their website and download a fix, that may or may not even work, or wait patiently for a few months (years?) for said fix. Come on, I don't mean cover ups where a company has invested a 100 million dollars in something to discover a fatal flaw and then hides it so they don't go bankrupt. I mean the generic, normal practice, of releasing an unfinished, unpolished, knowingly broken product with the promise of possible future fixes. Do you buy a fridge where the ice maker doesn't work and the company says "Yeah yeah we know. We just wanted to get the fridge out there. We're working on it. It'll be done in a month or two and we'll send it to you with instructions on how you can install it." Picture that for the turntable in your microwave or the alternator in the brand new car you just bought. No other industry has shown such a complete and total lack of respect or regard for its consumer base. And that problem is only the tip of the iceburg.

EA came up with the concept (for its Battlefield Line) of selling expansion packs that gave people who bought the expansion packs brand new "perks, abilities, add-in's, whatever" that could be used in the original game against people who didn't buy the expansion pack. What?!? Is that a big F-U or what? "Buy this expansion or suffer!"

Not to mention the quality of the supposed fixes in the first place. Just to pick on EA again for a moment, do you know how many patches there were for BF2142? Not only that, you had to install them all in a specific order, some updates, some full, and if you got confused, didn't do 3 hours of research, or mixed up a full with an update, you had to completely uninstall and re-install the game. A really tedious and time consuming process. Heck you frequently had to re-install the game just get to a new patch to work.  I own a PC repair shop. I'm good with computers! Honest injun. It was baffling, frustrating, and confusing to me! I quit buying EA games because of the whole fiasco. Literally. Don't care how good or enticing. I don't buy EA published games any more. Sure other companies are just as bad, but EA is the one the put the final straw on the camels back for me.

Then there's the DRM, the rootkits; all the ridiculous penalties that punish no one but honest consumers and don't stop piracy in the slightest. I know how almost everyone here feels about DRM, no need to say any more. Don't let the shortness of this paragraph stop you from thinking about the issue for a moment. Hasn't this just been an absolute nightmare for honest consumers?

Companies like Blizzard are rare - excuse me if they've changed - I haven't bought a Blizzard game in awhile. No reason, just changed tastes. I always had the utmost respect for them. They were the only company that would have endless and ridiculous release delays because, within reason, they wanted to publish a finished product. They were (are still? I hope) a rareity, an oddity.

Now with the advent and popularity of things like Steam and other digital download venues is ANY of that passed on to the fans or the consumers? SO let's see... no inventory, no warehouse, no shipping, no physical materials of any kind (for some, not all - but more and more), yet the same exact price, and frequently, more expensive? What?? I pay more than ever for a game, yah inflation ok, but I get less? No benefit what so ever for buying the game in digital format. Yet a whole new slew of problems. Ever buy a digital game, then try to reinstall said game a few years later? Doesn't always work out does it?

Talk about getting less... Activisions expansion for Black Ops. Four maps. An expansion pack is now 4 maps. No more story, no new features. No new perks, weapons, nothing. Just 4 maps. $15.00. Ok, that's a rip off. Understatement? They're not alone in the less for more, that's for sure. No one gives you ANYTHING any more. Not even a working product. Like how Xbox and PS3 got the maps 2 months and 1 month respectively, before the PC?

But they take care of you right? The tech support, the ease of contact. It's satisfying right? And high quality? That's where the extra profit from digital sales has gone, beef up the tech support. Ok, I don't need to comment on that one. Once again... short statement but endless hours of weeping for how many of you?

Since the vast majority of games are on-line and multiplayer based they go out of their way to make that a good experience right? Ok, 1 word. Hackers. How many people out there - show of hands - have quit playing a game, not because they got bored or lost interest, but because the Hackers made it just too frustrating and took all the fun out of the game. Yes, I know it would be difficult, but are you telling me that a single person who writes a hack couldn't be combatted by a dedicated team of programmers whose job it was to write code to detect and defeat hacks.  It's like anti-virus engines from 3 years ago being used to combat modern viruses. Things like Punkbuster and Valve anti-cheat are a joke. The best part? Punkbuster kicks me from games ALL the time because of, oh I don't know the color of my desktop or brand of my mouse, and when I finally get a stable game, after hours of trial and error, I have to play against hackers.

The companies don't actually listen to what their fans want. They try to tell us what we want. If 100,000 people sign a petition to Microsoft for something it's meaningless. Dell has to say, meh, we won't sell it if you don't do this - none of it is about actually pleasing your consumers its only about marketability. The COD franchise, only 1st person shooter in exisitence with no "Last Weapon used button". Maybe not the only 1, but all agree, fairly standard in the genre? Been on public forum standard wish lists for years. Ridiculously simple thing. For whatever reason, "Nah we don't care." Who can't come up with a dozen similar examples for their favorite company let alone their nemesis. Curse you EA. I would pay almost as much as Win7 ultimate for a windows version that had all the bloat and extras and nonsense removed; that was streamlined, and optimized, and ran as fast as possible. Bet there's more than a few fans for that... you'll never see it.

So I buck the system: I build my own PC, I buy expensive hardware, I'm constantly upgrading... I'm a gamer, a masochist if you will.. I deal with all that and then my reward: I get to deal with all of the above. Then I get told I'm a thief, ungrateful, a whiner, I don't matter, they don't care what I want, and it's all my fault that PC gaming is dying.

 

Holy Crap. I quit.

 

Game developers and publishers are insane.

A few people said it already, and I tend to agree - high price is the killer for gaming industry. A new game costs $60 on average. Games are usually targeting teens to yound adults (ages, say 14-30). Teens alwasys work on minimum-wage jobs, that means they have to work around 8 hours just to get one game (and most game's gameplay is barely that long). No wonder it's better for them to spend 30 minutes searching for the pirated version, rather then working 8 hours to get a disk that cost 50c to duplicate on a factory.

 

And yes, I understand that game design is a tireing and expencive process, (and please, correct me here - i did not research this) but i'd expect movies to be as hard (and costly) to develop, however cost of the best blu-ray movie is about $30, not $60.

Yup, you read that heading right. I think the software industry created the current situation that we have in the world with software piracy. Why is this you ask? I'm glad you asked. The number one reason is the high price of software in the first place, especially programs like Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended Edition ($699.99) from Adobe the last time I checked, sure you can get it cheaper from other sites and during sales but that price is an insult to alot of people, it says that nobody but basically upper-middle class people and up get to use Photoshop. Then there are real gems like the majority of Autodesks titles that carry price tags in the thousands of dollars. Microsoft Office Professional typically runs around $400-$500 unless you find it on sale somewhere or get a special deal, not to mention MS Windows 7 that will hit you for a couple of hundred for Home Premium and about $300-$400 if you want Ultimate. Combine those thing with the fact that computer software is one of the very very few products that the customer cannot return to the store if they find out it won't work on his or her system for some reason and you have most definately got a recipe for provoking your potential customers toward piracy of your product that they more than likely want to buy.

There are laws in place in the US that will not allow software to be returned to the store for anything other than an exchange for the exact same product if that software has been opened. I understand why these laws were made and that is because software companies knew that the potential was there to buy software take it home, copy it and return it to the store for a refund, whether or not people were actually doing that on much of a scale would likely make for an interesting debate but the laws got passed and it became easy for customers to get stuck with a $50 box of floppies or CDs (or more if you were buying more expensive software) that were of no use to them. Its not as bad now as it used to be I remember back in the days of MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 it was easy to buy software that either wouldn't run on your computer or you would have to work for hours or days trying to free up enough "conventional" RAM to satisfy that program's needs and load all of your necessary drivers as well because they had to be loaded into "conventional" RAM as well and all there was was 640k of conventional RAM in a system unless you go back a few more years then there was only 512k of conventional RAM. Back in those days the "Wing Commander" computer games were way popular but rare was the system that could just take one of the "Wing Commander" CDs pop it in and go. That is because the Wing Commander Games as did many other games in those days required a sizable chunk of that 640k of conventional memory to be free just for use by the game, but your mouse driver, keyboard driver, CD-ROM driver and a lot of other drivers wanted a chunk of this conventional memory to call their own too. If you could not figure out the delicate balancing act of managing that conventional RAM then you were not going to get that game to run. You couldn't solve to problem by installing more memory in your system either because the memory that you installed was "extended" RAM and you could have as much extended RAM as you could get your hands on and still you would only have that 640k of conventional RAM. I bet I learned a good 50% of what I know about computers today just from messing with DOS and Windows 3.1 games back in the day.

It was easy to get stuck with software you couldn't use back then, so yeah I can understand why people pirate software. What about demos and trials you ask? Hmmm I think the last game that had a demo that was big enough and lasted long enough to give people an idea of what the full game was going to be like was probably Warcraft 2. Okay maybe I am exaggerating some but they don't make demos like they used to, who wants to try out a trial of say an art program that is crippled so that it can't save or print? Not me. Oh and what about those time limited demos for games and the like that give you 60 minutes or maybe 30 minutes of play time? If the game has any depth at all it is likely to take the whole demo time just to start to figure out what you are doing. Then even if I am jumping with joy over the game I am still not likely to shell out the $40-$60 release time price for  the game.

If it's a game I like I wait the price out usually till I find it on in a crazy sale on Steam or something. I bought BioShock for $5.00 on D2D, Assassin's Creed $5 on D2D, Mass Effect for about $13 on Gamer's Gate the list goes waaaaay on like that. My point is that yes I got legitimate copies of those games but at those prices there is no way that the game company made very much money at all from my purchases. It is only very very rarely that I buy a game for the price that it is released at and I think those outrageous release prices are why we have such a problem with piracy. As far as downloading the leaked version of Crysis 2 before its actually released, I really think that would be in bad form even if I don't frown upon the piracy of more established games as much as some might think I should as long as that piracy is of the personal use variety and not to make a profit from someone elses work.

Some earlier in this discussion compared piracy to plagerism and I think it would be good to treat piracy as plagerism but the thing that some of those people may not realize is that I can copy literary works as much as I want as long as they are for my own personal use, it is when I begin to pass them off as my own or use them to make me a profit that it becomes a crime. Twenty-Five or Thirty years ago the idea that you could buy something with your own hard earned money and then not have the right to do what you pleased with it as long as you didn't use it to hurt someone else or yourself would have been looked upon as quite preposterous. I just think that this whole idea of copyright and intelectual property has gotten waaaaay out of line and is being used to beat people over the head that it was never intended to punish.

Here's my two cents, or 5:

1-I preordered the game and on the process of downloading the leaked version just to get a taste of the epic action thats waiting for me, plus I want to be able to jump into multy sooner then I've done in the past.

2-I have bought crysis since the 1st, I will admit I downloaded the first 1 and loved it and just had to buy it because it was worth my hard earned cash, and then warhead, just went straigh bought it and enjoyed it.

3-It leaked, not cracked, so it's not our fault for downloading, and it's technically not a retail copy, but whatever I'm not familiar with the legal system and the great terms they got for irrelevant things.

4-DRM is ridiculous and any product with it will fail, look at ubisoft infamous online thing, no more pc games for me from that publisher, sad that i enjoyed assassin 2 for free on pc, brotherhood I just had to get because I enjoyed 2, unfortunately the online thing kills it and it ain't worth it, if u want securety take a tip from activision and have it installed on steam.

i actually think that this will urge more people to buy it in 2 ways. 1) most people who download games b4 release want to see if it is worth buying. just because they make a kickass trailer doesnt mean its any good. they want to see for themselves. and if they dont have a key, they cant do fuck all but play sp. 2) the people who download it will make video of gameplay and put it on youtube, and if it looks appealing to people, then they will definatily invest in a copy. Plus alot of people dont even know how to download a torrent or even install a cracked game. but my question is, how the hell does at least one copy of everygame always get stolen? its the game companies fault for not keeping better watch on people. why should pc gamers be punished because some a**hole steals a game and torrents it? plus there are tons of torrents for games on other platforms. eliminating one platform will just cause another platform to have more torrented games, and so on and so on. its a vicious circle to abolish one platform.

How about EA let loose a Torrent with a Virus in it. That would teach the stealin bastids!

I can understand the try before you buy concept but the reality is once you've DL'd it free (how long does that take? days, hours, weeks?) then started playing come on, the reality isn't "gee that was swell, I think now that I've finished the game I'm going to do the right thing and buy a legitamate copy" the majority will just move on without thinking about the theft.

The reality is if people keep ripping off, the games will stop being produced.

Shit if you wait long enough it'll show up on sale on Steam for $9.99, by thenm the bugs wil be worked out (Its Crysis, it will be buggy and run shitty out of the gate until patched)

First of all I think anyone that supports not paying for a video game is an idiot plain and simple! Not only that, this makes you a THEIF! No different then walking into a local Wal-mart and stealing a pair of running shoes. Why do you people seem to think the internet owes you something just because you pay for the service each month? Why would any honest person think stealing is ok? I learned at a young age stealing is not ok. Support the gaming industry by paying for the software. Also another point, paying $60 bucks for a game is not bad considering it takes the better part of 2 or 3 years to make the game in the first place. Game makers deserve to be paid for there work do they not? They do not deserve to have some zit-faced bong smoking 15 year old downloading there work for free of some torrent site.

I preorderd the game last year with amazon and will receive it in due time, with no demo for pc coming, yes I will download it it, my curiosity got the best of me. Do I feel bad about this, no!!. I will buy the official release, actually cannot wait to receive it and the beta leak is just that: a preview of what I will pay for soon enough.

Developers will have to learn that most downloaders eventually will start paying for games, we all realise that without money nothing good can be developed.

Developers will have to learn not to ignore the pc crowd anymore, we think different from console players and do want to now what we are putting down our dollars for.

conclusion : illegal downloads are not good,ignoring pc players is not good either. Make downloadable content affordable not more expensive than console games. Look at what is happening with ebooks. Look at what steam accomplished. In short : support pc gamers and they will support you

What a bunch of bull shit. EA pulled key devs away from the project while the first Crysis was still bieng developed in order to work on a PS3 project. As a result, many planned features of the game WERE JUST LEFT UNFINISHED.

 

It seems at this time like THE BEST thing that could happen for PC games is if  EVERYONE pirated EAs games and boycotted them altogether.

 

Any one who says otherwise has their had so far up their own ass that they can diganose their own colon cancer.

On message boards everywhere, in addition to the usual excuses for piracy, I see people angrily saying that Crytek should not be blaming the PC community in their official statement.

Where exactly did they blaming the rest of us? "Piracy continues to damage the PC packaged goods market and the PC development community" means exactly what it says. It hurts all of us because developers will stop producing PC games if they're just hurt the bottom line by being pirated before release.

Yes, it is the entirely fault of whoever leaked the game (most likely an EA or Crytek employee) that this incident happened. However, it falls on the rest of us to not download and share the leaked build to stop it from actually becoming piracy. Saying that "it's Crytek's fault because they didn't put out a demo" makes no sense whatsoever and is a pretty shallow excuse. Apparently pirates can't even hear what they're saying themselves.

This has nothing to do with the fact that you can pirate games on the PC, Crytek. This leak was caused by either an employee, or a hacker. More likely the employee.

Blaming the PC platform for piracy is just stupid. If it was leaked for Xbox 360, people would be pirating the Xbox 360 version. It has nothing to do with platform. They're hopping on the "PC IS BAD DURR PIRACY" bandwagon instead of, I dunno, improving their internal security.

To me, what Crytek said seems like it's just going to bring a lot more negativity to the PC platform and will encourage shit console ports that we're so used to getting now.

I, for one, will be buying the game legitimately.

I'm not saying that having DRM gives people the right to pirate a game, but it sure makes some people uninterested in buying it. I was going to buy the original Crysis 3-pack, until I read numerous reviews about the crappy and incredibly difficult to remove DRM it installs on your system. Many people said that the only way they could get rid of it was by using a 3rd party program or doing a system wipe and reinstalling the OS. If their DRM is that bad then it's not worth my money and I can find something else to occupy my time with.

Let's hope that Crysis 2 isn't the same.

  As a Former Pirate I will tell you I would love to download this game... However I am starting to see the effect this type of behavior is causing to the industry...  This game is truely a defining game for the PC, and a game that all other companys will strive to top... It will only creat an even higher standard in gameing accross the board...

  I also think stoping priates all together is going to be imposible, I think to keep the PC indstry alive other ways of generating income will have to be thoght of..  I'm not sure where people stand on "in game advertising" but im all for it... I mean this is somehting the industry could use against the pirates buy including the pirated download numbers to increase advertising revenue... YES, they may only sell 800 million copys but if 10 million people download it well then $$$... I think you get the picture... this will also increase compeition with in the industry because only good game's will get companys to shell over the money... I mean lest face it we have come to deal with this on TV whats the difference of having a few ads or bilboards in game if it helps to keep the PC industry alive. Who knows maybe eventually it will be worth it for the PC industry to PUSH Priating games..LOL now that might just throw the priate community for a loop...

I saw the torrent  and was was excited. Then I read the release notes and was like: hmmm... I think I will wait.

The reason is that I want to see all the eye candy. It would suck to play the game without it. Thats what made C1 so good to play. So instead I got on steam and reinstalled/downloaded C1 again played it up.

The PC game market is flawed just like the music industry. Steam has figured out how to sell games and make tons of money online. Other game vendors and the music industry need to do the same.

If this was the full released version I would have downloaded it, and then if it was good I would have for sure bought it on release day. If it sucked well then its their own fault for making a crap sequel.

I loved Crysis the original, and also spend so much time over the years playing with the Editor, Crysis 2 is my most anticipated game of the year. I preordered the game a long time ago, so I felt no issue with downloading the leaked version.

 

I guess my main motivation was to see if I would need to upgrade my graphics prior to the release of the final, something I would have found out from a legitimate demo.

 

I decided to play one level, few levels into the campaign as to not spoil the full experience when my purchased copy arrives in a month. The conclusion I come to is that I just can't  wait to get my final copy! The game runs like butter (yes I'm aware it's not the final DX11 and high textures available) unlike the original on my machine which is no slouch. Note that whatever the defaults are in the beta, the graphics look vastly superior to the original even at this stage, and it still runs twice as well.

 

Anyone who watches the leaked videos, and or plays the leak will just want the final game on release. The people who were going to pirate still will, and yeah derr the final code will also make its way to torrent sites, so I just don't see what all the fuss is about.

 

The only thing that stands out to me is that someone at Crytek or EA is to blame for the leak. not the public.

the people who download the leaked content are the same people who will crack and copy a production DVD. They would also copy production console media as well. So, in the end it really doesn't make a difference. As for the comments about pulling the PC versions all together that's just silly, that's like not selling gas to prevent people from stealing cars.

There needs to be a collaboration of the public gamer with the developers and publishers to create an more effective yet less frustrating form of DRM. I love PC gaming for its advantages it sometimes brings. All the mods we get that make a great game even better or a terrible game worth buying. Counter-Strike was spawned out of a mod, Battlefield 1942 Desert Combat was the premise for Battlefield 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC and Clear sky, the former was an excellent game made even better and the latter was a disappointment but after modding some thought it was even better than SoC. Those are just a sliver of what PC gaming is and has offered. Sure it's nice to save some cash by getting a big game for free, everybody loves free. But I would rather not jeopardize my passion for PC gaming by torrenting this game. If you guys couldn't already tell, most developers are mainly focusing on console gaming when it comes to something multiplatform or a new IP. PC gaming mostly gets left in the dust. It's either not optimized or buggy as hell. Yeah there are exceptions here and there and yes there are some PC exclusives that kick ass in the present day. For me at least, I feel the innovation and creative has slipped for the majority on the PC platform. Everyone sees profit on a console, because its cheaper, more mainstream, and pirating, though it occurs, is not nearly as rampant as on the PC. If we all  just suck it up and become a little more honest, we can change all of that and bring back the focus too PC gaming. It's still there but to bring the roots back to where developers can really explore their creativity and potential. Nothing beats the power of a custom built PC and the expansive hardware that doesn't limit their desires and goals. We have a voice to change everything. We all need to come together and use it.

gamefly+wii or gamefly+PSP = unlimited free games forever for $0.  other platforms can benefit from the same arrangement for only the price of a small hardware mod.  Console gamers don't need torrents to "warez" games far more efficiently and effectively than PC gamers do, yet torrents get the blunt of things?

Perhaps if legislators and publishers focused on punnishing leaks (or preventing them), and finding other incentives to prevent illicit play, then we won't have another metallica on our hands (and who likes people who punnish other people for liking their stuff?)

Hackers will ALWAYS find a way to circumvent any copy protection, the sooner publishers quit trying to fight the losing battle to "perfect" copy protection, and go back to focusing on providing more and higher quality products, the better off and happier everyone will be.

It is funny how ignorant publishers are on the whole "which platform gets pirated more" debate, they obviously have no clue as to how much money they lose on used games, has anyone ever been to a Gamestop lately, or checked on Ebay?

The greedy ass publishers, mainly the ignorant delusional bastards that think charging 60 dollars for a PC game is justifiable, do not make a single cent any time a console game is resold. How about they charge reasonable amounts of money for PC games, granted the thousands of dollars we invest on our machines, and the amount of crap we have to go through.

Raising the price on a PC game will get it pirated more, not make up the loss, holding us honest PC gamers hostage and making us suffer for other peoples morality choices.

I have no problem purchasing PC games for 50 dollars or less, personally, I believe PC games over 50 dollars for the regular copy deserve to be pirated, that price hike is almost never the fault of the developer, it is the fault of the greed driven publishers who essentially run slave shops.

I personally do not pirate games, I just wait until the price drops, since no PC game on release is worth playing, they are all buggy poorly optimized pieces of junk, they will run even worse if they are pirated.

I won't download it, but I doubt that I'll buy it either.  I bought the first one full price, and really liked it but I'm very skeptical of Crysis 2 living up to it's promises to the honest PC gamers.

there's no way developers will pull off from making games for the pc. There is always going to be a few developers willing to take the money of gamers that buy games legaly. That thing about pc gaming dying its mere BS cuz companies are way too greedy to leave this market.

I have no money to buy games but I love to play them.  I have a shitty job, lots of bills, and expensive health problems.  If I pirate a game it's because I don't have the money to buy it in the first place.  So, how does the VG buisiness lose money on me?  I pirated the original Crisis and played it for 20 minutes and deleted it.  If I paid $60 for that piece of crap game I would have been pissed.

Now, if someone felt the same way about that game as I do, I can see them downloading this Crysis 2 torrent just to see how it is.
