Nightly Big Thoughts, Small Talk

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponReddit

We’re officially through half of 2008, and it’s also been one week since the new website was launched. Hope you’ve enjoyed your stay so far. You’ve been pretty vocal about the change, with both positive (“more content is awesome!) and critical (“the color scheme burns my corneas!”) feedback. Either way, keep the shout-outs coming – we want to hear more from you. And one place you can definitely do that is in the comments section of each article. In fact, this post is a great place to do it. Every night, we’ll be running a recap of the news from the day and give you a chance to talk back (or is that back talk?) to us and fellow readers in a friendly discussion. Want to play an impromptu game of Team Fortress 2 or talk about a movie you saw recently? This is the place to do it. But first, the news:

Configuring your own Dream Machine? OCZ wants to burn a hole in your pocket with their new “low cost” SSD drives aimed at consumers. They’re still pricey, but you might be able to afford them with money saved on Gainward’s ATI 4870 videocards. The Nvidia add-in board partner is sharing the love with AMD with high performance cards that’ll give you great framerates on high-resolution widescreen monitors – even those with 16:9 dimensions. A killer PC gaming rig is going to get hot, so you’ll want to check out miniature refrigeration tech being developed at Purdue University. Also pretty hot is our new guide to Slipstreaming your Windows XP Vista install, but what’s definitely not is AT&T’s $700 price tag for off-contract iPhones. That kind of pricing is almost criminal.

avatarHEAVY update???!!!

HOE-LEEE crap. My heavy is finally getting an update?! For his first unlock, I want the speed of a scout, a rocket-launching infinite ammo mini-gun, a sniper-proof helmet, a flame-proof vest, 700 health... and I want all of this after 1 achievment. Dammit.

Also: MGS4 = one of the greatest games ever made. I have no idea why I included this.

You're not allowed to be a Heavy right now.

So, I'm really loving all of the new content (and the quantity/frequency of it), but in order to avoid information overload I'd like to understand what goes where.

I'm subscribed to the "all posts" RSS feed. I prefer to read my news here. I'm also subscribed to the newsletter - is this only duplicate content from the posts, or will I miss anything good?

Thanks!

avatarGo ahead, I dare you...

Don't you dare change the color scheme!

If it's too daring for some viewers, they should adjust their chroma settings.

Dare I say more? (man I need a thesaurus).

There's no time like the future.

avatarThe Pyro update for TF2 was

The Pyro update for TF2 was a good update becuase the before Pyros were the odd men they were not great at deffence or offence. The new update for Pyro has made them vary usful in deffence and i wouldnt be suprized to see some on leage teams.

There unlock of the backburner is the only why i could even think their over powered. The backburner still has the flaw of criting everything when one persons back is turn, meaning that if your medic is watching your back the backburners coming to get you and the crits are ON.

The other unlocks of the flare gun and the axe dont seem at all over powered.

Over all in my eye the pyro is the new deffence class and its not an overpowered one.

avatari'll start!

For anyone who doesn't know, the staff usually plays TF2 on our Maximum PC/PC Gamer public server, located at pcgmaxpc.nuclearfallout.net

Valve just announced that the next class to get new unlockable weapon upgrades and achivements will be the Heavy class. Developer Robin Walker made an interesting post on the game's official blog discussing the challenges of designing new weapons. IMO, the latest Pyro upgrades are terribly unbalanced.

I caught both Wall-E and Wanted this past weekend - watching one right after the other is not recommended. Wall-E is probably my favorite Disney/Pixar movie so far, though the Incredibles comes a close second (robots and superheros pander to my heart. Wanted, on the other hand, was a different story. I liked it -- only because my expectations were really low -- but really wish they stayed true to the original supervillians plot from the source material. A code in the literal fabric of reality? Give me a break. But congrats to Mark Millar, I guess, who's now finding huge success churning out novel story pitches to an idea-starved Hollywood.

avatarGeez, and I thought we were cubicle-mates

Tf2 news and u dont fill me in? I see how it is -_-  Yeah the maxpc pub is nearly always full of cool guys looking to share a bit of pwnage in tf2, u dont find many 'cal assholes' in there which is a uniquity in itself. If u see a BoNK.whisp in there tell em hes a shmuck o_0.

As for the pyro updates, maybe for twl play its unfair, but from what i have seen in highly competitive play the update has only made the pyro a viable option on defense but nothing overpowering. Most clans role together making the flare gun useless, also it doesnt do much damage but meh, for the lone ranger player trying to nag at u its a good tool to force him to fallback. The new axe is beastly, but never versus a good team do you ever get the chance to chop down anymore then 2 players, especially once their lit on fire and fully alert to your presence. As for the backburner nobody is going to use it cept in pubs. The air burst is the by far much more versatile and useful (again in high competition) the air burst is excellent atop C on gpit and good for disconnecting uber duos

While the updates sure made a lot of pyros a great deal more annoying, I don't feel their overpowered. IMO

 Heavy updates eh? hmm..
