New People Widget Coming to Gmail
In the midst of all the NFC Google news, the search giant also announced it will be rolling out a fairly major cosmetic change to Gmail over the coming weeks. The new People widget will occupy the top right hand portion of the interface and give users quick access to contacts. The widget surfaces content available in the Google ecosystem as a sort of ambient information display.
Next to each email message, users will see contextual information about the contacts included in the mail. The widgets indicates status, recent emails, Buzz posts (!?), shared Google Docs, and public calendar events. There are handy shortcuts to start group chats, emails, or calendar events at the top of the People widget.
For a service that is increasingly becoming a social experience, this could be a really excellent addition. Although, the inclusion of Buzz is odd. We know Google scrapes Twitter data. Why not just include that too?
