Is AT&T Disabling 4G Uploads on the HTC Inspire 4G?
When the HTC Inspire 4G launched on AT&T recently, users began noticing some issues with upload speeds. Specifically, this "4G" phone had very slow 3G-like uplink speeds. AT&T responded saying the Inspire 4G did not support HSUPA (the upload component of HSPA+). Case closed? Hardly. Engadget has been hearing from sources that AT&T has actually disabled HSUPA on the Inspire 4G.
It is, in fact, certain that HSUPA is supported in the hardware. The Inspire 4G uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 at 1GHz. This SoC contains not just the application processor and GPU, but as is the case with all Snapdragons, it has the cellular radio as well. This package is identical to what is used in the Desire HD, Xperia Play, and MyTouch 4G. It most definitely has HSUPA. So why is does AT&T have it disabled in the firmware?
Other phones on AT&T's network have HSUPA (like the iPhone 4) and they get faster upload speeds with no problem. AT&T has not responded to these claims, but we wouldn't be surprised if they pushed an update at some point in the future to enable HSUPA. For the time being, users will have to make due with a few hundred kbps on their uploads.
