More Schwarzenegger, less Gomez...

Hatred is always a waist of time but what can you get out of it on the internet? You type in your insults and then what? A little rush while you type but then nothing, you don't feel any better, It's just not like real life where you can do some real violence to some old woman and then go home and relive your memories of power. So, what compels so many people to do it?

avatar

Bullwinkle J Moose

Sounds like a personal problem...

If you can't keep your girlfriend, maybe you just diddn't use enough Duct Tape!

Hey, Here's a hot tip!

Turn that old woman into a movie star with my movie star construction kit

1. Just find an image of your favorite star and enlarge the face and print it out

2. Color with magic markers or crayons if necessary

3. Glue onto a paper bag and your done

Here are some examples for you

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100410212154/southpark/images/9/99/Parishilton.png

or paste a different image to each side of the bag for variety

you can even try lemiwinks or Mr Garrison if thats your thing

Bullwinkle.... that's about the creepiest damned thing I've ever heard you say....

Here is how to easily go from Win8 to Win8.1:

MiGreen

Thank you John, I was sure someone would have some useful information. Have a great day.

I had the Technet version of Win8.1 Pro RTM installed. I had 3 updates that got me to the GA (General Availability- the latest release) version.

It absolutely amazes me how the human race can be so evil to each other, over inadament objects like a PC or an OS, just because we all are individuals and have different tastes & likes.

Bottom line, it all comes down to personal choice, which is a God given right for most of the people on this planet. Be thankful many of us here on this website have a choice... for now. Many people in other places around the world have no choices at all.

All this bickering about choice of OS would be a mute point if the world was being threaten by destruction via meteor or something threatening life on this planet.

I've been an IT professional for about 30 years and it pains me to see the great lenths that people go to insult, blame, belittle each other over nonsense. People would rather side with corporations (which do not have your best interest at hand) over people (who are in most cases, have the same day to day struggles).

I guess they feel they have the right because they've invested time in whatever OS they've purchased/used!

Just take a look at the comments in any of the articles on MPC and my point is proven!

WoW, just Wow!

Whenever I run across such a posting, it reminds me that not all of the human race deserves to die off.

Lots of people on this site take their liberties for granted. They seem to think that their voices are (for some strange reason) more important than others.

I belong to a lot of sites, and their forums are all pretty much the same, small groups of individuals who seem to think that the site belongs to them. There are also the main 'trolls' who everybody despises.

The human race is dooomed to do itself in one of these days.

People can now be discriminated/bullied against because of the choice of operating system that they use on their computers!

Who would have thought??

great comment! i agree with the sentiments.

your common sense falls upon deaf ears on the internet unfortunately.

avatar

MiGreen

Wow. Someone without questionable emotional attachments! Nice to see. Thanks

avatar

CyberCam

Thank you for the kind comment!

I use and support all 5 Desktop/Server OS's (Unix, Linux, BSD, Windows & OSx), sure I have a preference, but I rather not say anything on this site (I realize my avatar is a dead give-a-way though).

Sure enough, someone would take offense to it and would want to start bringing up the negatives, purposely look for fight, and I just don't put what little energy I have left into fruitless negative bickering.

My observation of the last 30 years of technology... "the more technology we aquire, the more it dehuminizes us as a species". Basic manners, are a thing of the past and the majority of humans have no clue what "manners" are!

Cheers!

It's garbage people are having problem with it the watermark staying.
I tired 8.1 preview and had to resort back to 8.0 cause it's garbage. People are having the same problems I had with the 8.1 preview.

Learn to use a computer?

avatar

PCLinuxguy

Agreed. ID-10-T error. Subcase notes P.E.B.K.A.C. issue.

avatar

Nixon

Updated it just today. Have been in classes all day so won't be able to check it out until this evening.

avatar

FireGarden

Classes on how to use 8.1? ;p

avatar

crwlngkngsnk

Yeah, yeah fuck a Windows 8, fuck a Windows 8.1. Anyways, support for 8.0 ends in two years.

avatar

RandomInt

It must be comforting to know the meth dealer didn't rip you off this time.

So far, other than a hiccup with changing my Lock Screen, everything went smooth and so far, I'm very impressed. I've noticed that the update actually freed up about 5-7 GB of HDD space and about 1GB of RAM usage. Not sure how the drop in RAM was achieved, but that's a pretty significant increase.

avatar

PCLinuxguy

Nice. I didn't check those when i swapped over. I'll have to check that later on.

avatar

JokerProductions

I will not be upgrading to this turd. There sorry excuse for "bringing back the start button" is horrendous. I will stick with Start Is Back, thank you very much. So much better than this and all the other features are for touch screen which I don't use because I'm not a mong. Tarra.

avatar

PCLinuxguy

considering you run Windows 8 already i find this rather funny. Most of the tweaks are either under the skin or relate more toward the Metro side of things rather than the desktop side (that you default to) So really there's nothing there to sway you from not updating. Not saying you have to though, it just seems hypocritical to mock 8.1 while rocking 8.0 since there's not that big of a difference.

avatar

Bullwinkle J Moose

Other than fixing and streamlining the spyware already in Windows 8 and adding more more backdoors and spyware such as Skype, I don't see any tweaks to improve end user security

When will there be an update for that?

avatar

RandomInt

Here's a list:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/jj721676.aspx#security

avatar

Bullwinkle J Moose

That is a list of the ways that "others" can control the end user

I was referring to ways the end user controls their own security which of course cannot be done on any Internet connected Windows O.S. made in the past 10 years

You misunderstood my meaning on purpose

Anytime the end user must rely on "Others" for security, they have none!

Show us some security features the end user can use to take back control

It's a matter of National Security after all

MINE, not yours!

avatar

PCLinuxguy

don't feed the troll: he won't believe you anyway :-)

avatar

RandomInt

Yeah, I know what you mean, but I get the sense that a lot of these people aren't trolls. Some obviously are - like dbqfan - but I think most of them are genuinely angry.

I've gotta say, I'm kind of fascinated by the hatred of Windows 8 on this site...it's so over the top. It's beyond irrational, because there's nothing you can do in Windows 7 that you can't do in Windows 8. And since NT 3.51, customization has gotten easy enough that it should take experienced users no more than two steps to launch any frequently used application or feature.

So this is interesting to watch, but the downside is that the hatred is giving other readers a warped view of reality. That's why Popular Science stopped allowing comments:
http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2013-09/why-were-shutting-our-comments

For a site/magazine like MPC that exists to give people facts, it's a weird juxtaposition.

avatar

PCWolf

Please, tell me why I would need Windows 8/8.1 over Windows 7? My SSD already boots me up pretty fast. I don't have a Touch Monitor, so the Touch UI is worthless for me. Don't have any use for Hot Corners or the stupid search features. "Everything" Search works better than anything MS could put in a OS. I don't need an OS that wants me to Log into the MS Network every 30 seconds. & I don't have to sync Multiple devices with any Cloud Services built into the OS. I have tried Windows 8 & see no valid point in Buying it. So, do tell me, WHY I would ever need Windows 8 over Windows 7?? If you find Windows 8 useful for your needs, then by all means, Enjoy.

Ninjawithagun

Hell, I can't even see the troll because your big ass tin foil hat is blocking my view :P

MSDN has a list of UX/UI updates:

Ghost XFX

Like a feed tube leading from Ballmer's backside, I'll steer clear of this one blindfolded.

avatar

PCLinuxguy

Upgraded to 8.1 on my triple boot rig. Works better than the 8.1 preview did.

avatar

Granite

Just got done installing. Went without a hitch. Initially looks pretty much like Win8. Don't have the time to really check it out for differences.

avatar

InfiniteImp

No plans to move to it. When Microsoft can provide me something which is actually an IMPROVEMENT over my current Win7 then I'll switch. As it stands now, Windows 8 (even 8.1) is a step down. Don't give me a new OS and make it harder to use. I don't need charms, tiles (even ones I can resize) and touch control. I need that on my tablet, not my desktop.

I run a pair of 27" monitors. They are about 3ft in front of me. Even if I they were touch screen I could not reach them. And, if I could, you can bet that by the end of the month I'd need physio.

In short, I'm now waiting for Windows 9. If they give me back a proper desktop OS, I'll switch. Windows 8 is a tablet or touchscreen laptop OS only and a really big mistake by Microsoft.

avatar

vrmlbasic

120 bucks for this OS w/o upgrade?!

avatar

Ninjawithagun

Easy solution to that - buy Windows 8 (or Pro) and then update to Windows 8.1. Just saved yourself about $80. Next!

avatar

Vano

Just did an upgrade on my laptop. Took about 30-40 minutes.
First of all, that s.o.b. would not let me use my local account until I disconnected the internet (which by the way I had to do through router, because my laptop's "plane mode" apperently doesn't work without entering into windows...
Then I had to install new version of StartIsBack.

Finally LogMeIn Hamachi lost all it's network settings because they are located in windows directory. 8.1 basically renamed old windows folder to windows.old, so I had to manually copy needed files to restore hamachi functionality.

The "start button" bullshit is...well, bullshit. "We are listening! Here is the start button as you asked for" - MS said, well, you are not freaking listening, we don't need just a button, we need a freaking menu!

avatar

FatOldGuy

I would if I had a notification.

avatar

dbqfan

I do not have Win 8 installed and I never will. Microsoft is just like our great government - forcing something on us that we do not want.

avatar

Ninjawithagun

Don't like our government? Then get the hell out - leave America! GO MOVE TO RUSSIA OR CHINA IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT HERE - NUFF SAID!

avatar

vrmlbasic

Russia and China have more fully formed versions of what the US government is becoming. So your suggestion is asinine.

Though putin is infinitely more manly & competent than obama. Then again, that's not exactly hard to be.

avatar

GenMasterB

You're ALMOST correct with that remark. If you don't like America and its ways, then move, but if you just don't like the current Government.... Then get out and VOTE!!

avatar

Shalbatana

I'll update of course. But given how these things historically go. I'm going to wait a week or three, just in case.
