It seems odd that AMD is comparing the lower end 2XX series to GPUs that are 3 (soon to be 4) generations old. Did they not have any newer GPUs laying around for comparison? Or are they trying to confuse the performance numbers by referencing older cards that (when they were new) were pretty impressive cards? "Were" being the operative word.

I bought a $200 460 which was slightly better than 5770...3 years ago. I'm not sure I would pay $90 for it now.

Yeah, it's all PR lies. The 260X is made on a 160mm2 die with a 128 bit bus, versus the 334mm2 die and 256 bit bus on the old 5870 which was released just over four years ago. Sure, it's slightly faster... it's also dramatically cheaper to make. And certainly, a gamer who bought a 5870 isn't going to be looking to upgrade to a slightly faster low-end card unless their old board dies. Meanwhile, the $200 and $300 boards are just rebrands of existing models - the whole change of branding is just designed to make it less obvious that AMD is continuing to shift price tiers. If your last card cost $200, your next card in the same tier will cost $300-350.

Hope it comes out soon. Really want to 280x or 290 from my 6870 I have at the moment.

So then would the r7-250 be more powerful than a 7750? It seems if it's as powerful as a 5770 then yes but the 7750 has 512 stream processors and the r7-250 only has 384. Apparently that's not a bottle necking specification... I see the core clock is overclocked by 200+mhz. I guess that would make up the difference. Can someone confirm this?

(Steam Processors)should be Stream...yes? Unless AMD went Steampunk!

Maybe valve has designed their own ISA now, too?

A GPU...running on steam?! I'd buy that, like right now!

Definitely water cooling though!

Pureoverclocking

290X R9 is on newegg for 729.99.

The Mac

MSI European pricing was earlier today

290X - 649 EU

290 - 519 EU

avatar

Carlidan

That can't be right. If so, damn they are expensive then. 290X would be almost 900 dollars and the 290 would be 700 dollars. That just too much then.

avatar

The Mac

in the past, release prices in the EU directly correlate to us prices. No conversion. Due to VAT mostly...

Carlidan

oh okay... meh still too expenisve for me. I'm guessing 280x is the way to go for me. Too bad I won't get to experience the true audio. :( The 260 is too low for me. I'm probably going to upgrade near middle or 2014 or end of it. So I need a somewhat decent upgrade inbetween.

Well, just to show you how wild all this speculation is, check this out:

reviews are up at guru3d.com 4k included

Too bad they didn't do the 290x. Otherwise, it looked like a Damn good lineup.

avatar

The Mac

still under NDA till October 11th.

The Mac

hardocp as well.

Going buy these MSRPs, the R9 290X will be around $499....

I'm trying not to be too optimistic here. But to think it will be $399 would cause mass fury through the nvidia offices and start fights among consumers.

avatar

The Mac

not a chance the 290x will be $499

$550 bare minimum, most likely $599.

avatar

Ghost XFX

Then that means they'll have to come up with something to close the gap between the cards. Otherwise, it wouldn't sell as well as it possibly could.

The 770 would go uncontested, and nvidia would have it's own little niche to themselves. But if AMD priced the R9 290X just so, they would put the boots to nvidia. Who would buy a 770 or a 780, unless nvidia came down on their prices?

avatar

The Mac

290 non x will fill the gap.

the 280x is a little slower than the 770, the 290 will be significantly faster than the 770 for about the same price.

This is speculation of course, no prices have been released yet.

Lalo67

Lilly, when will info on R9 290X and 290 video cards be released, few days? Since it's all hush at the moment.

avatar

vrmlbasic

I would like to see how these cards compare to the Radeon HD 7000 series cards (are they just 1:1 rebrands?). It would be nice if the R9 280X could indeed crush games @ 1440 w/o crossfire.

avatar

borkbork

New architecture, so they aren't rebrands. But yeah, hopefully they're as good as they're making it sound.

avatar

The Mac

no, the 280x is a rebranded 7970 ghz eddition.

The only new architecture will be the 290, and 290x.

avatar

borkbork

Right, guess that's what I get for 290 tunnel vision..

avatar

Chronologist

I'm curious as to whether or not these benchmark numbers include tests that factor in the advantage that their Mantle API supposedly confers.

avatar

tom_m

We don't expect to see Mantle in the wild until Dice puts into Battlefield 4. I think that's scheduled for mid-December, and Dice is apparently getting early access. Since it's mostly a replacement for DirectX, the program has to be coded for it specifically, as far as I know. We'll probably start seeing Mantle-aware benchmarks in Q1 next year.

avatar

cornyorange

I'm assuming by 5870 and 5770 he means the 7850 and 7770, right?

avatar

JosephColt

R9 280X sounds like the perfect mid range card at a good price, and if the performance is that much faster than a 760, they will sell like hot cakes.

avatar

cornyorange

tho you can find 7970's for $300 right now, which from what I understand, are a better card

avatar

The Mac

its actually the same card.

its a rebrand.

avatar

Chronologist

So the R280X is 7970 with a faster core clock and memory clock?

avatar

Pixuhl

Well, I assume there are some bios tweaks or something on top of the increased clock speeds and slightly higher memory bandwidth.

avatar

The Mac

of course.

A couple people have tried flashing the 280x bios on their 7970GE and have ended up with fancy paper weights.

lol

One cool thing is it crossfires with 7xxx

avatar

The Mac

yup. its tahiti.
