Order Prime as a gift at the $79 price and specify the "gift" be sent to you the day your existing membership ends.

Save $20 if it's worth the effort for you.

Completely worth the extra $20. My only regret is not getting Prime sooner.

I will gladly pay the extra money. Great prices, huge selections, easy and free returns, 2 day service, and I watched a movie on Prime last night.

One thing that folks do not realize is that Amazon will soon be turning on SAME DAY delivery with Amazon Prime. That is why Amazon is now collecting sales tax in states so Amazon can build distribution warehouses locally. I usually have next day delivery for most of my purchases as it is and I can see same day coming soon.

Problem is, the "2-day" part wasn't the reason I had Prime, it was the "free shipping" part, so making it 'same day' or even 'click and product materializes in your hand' is not really important for most people, if they have to pay $100/year for that.

My opinion is that it's still a heckuva good deal. I'm well satisfied with Amazon, and even toilet paper arrives on time (though you probably want to order it before you get to the last role), the streaming is icing on the cake (though admittedly a bit stale at times).

Kind of sucks that we get charged sales tax now, but I can't complain, it's part of the obligation of living in a (reasonably) free country.

We are thinking about switching back to Netflix once our Prime membership expires in June. The old rate justified the limited content and clunkier interface (compared to Netflix).

Free shipping was a nice perk though!

Well if you consider the free shipping over $35 and all the promotion free shipping items you buy, is prime really worth it? Especially considering their great idea of "addon items" that aren't qualified for prime.

For $99 I can get shoprunner and buy from a place that doesn't charge tax. Amazon is overlooking the fact that with prime, I have less incentive to shop around.

When they started charging tax for GA purchases I cancelled my Prime subscription. So instead of making up for the immediate and global 7% increase for all purchases, they increase Prime? LOL

7% sales tax?! That's a wonky number by itself but GA is supposed to be a _red_ state. What the heck happened?

I do agree that when Amazon jacks up the price of Prime and adds MD sales tax (6%) that it'll become less appealing to me than it is now. It would essentially become me paying 99/year to avoid driving to my local stores to pick things up and being "locked into" Amazon even if they are charging a higher price.

Yep, vote out those losers in Atlanta! Afterall, it wasn't Amazon's idea, you can thank the Georgia legislature for that crap.

Still, even with tax, I can get my crap for better prices than Walmart,-and I don't have to go there- The last time I was in a Walmart was 6+mo ago.

Actually in the case of GA it was Amazon's idea.

I noticed the tax when I was about to buy something. Up to then I would use Amazon exclusively, but after seeing they were going to charge taxes, I looked in other places. Newegg had the same item at the same price, no shipping, no taxes, and a $5 coupon for something.

This isn't a surprise. It's still a good deal for anyone that buys a reasonable amount of items through Amazon. That's not even considering the Prime Streaming content to which you have access.

Prime streaming is worthless as they've locked it down in some screwy attempt to harangue people into buying a Kindle.

Indeed, I don't even utilize Amazon Prime's Streaming and books but the sheer quantity of items I order from Amazon pays for itself 3x over with the free shipping, not to mention it's only 2 day shipping.

Even at 99/year, you can't beat that.

I agree. The shipping reliability, the fact that whatever you order arrives just exactly when promised and the huge selection of Prime products makes it a favorite for us and for many others I know. When I got the notice from them this morning my first reaction was "still very much worth it".
