I think that it is hilarious that Steam is fcking shit up. So many fans boys were bashing M$ and hyping Steam. Wow, what a turd this is turning out to be. Steam boxes? They're too expensive and won't sell well. Low margins will lead to even fewer hardware vendors participating . I love steam, on my PC, where I can do many more things than play steam. Go buy your steam boxes you fcking losers.

I love that Alienware isn't waiting any longer. I think this is a great idea and I for one will be picking one of these up for the living room.

But you won't be able to play your steam games .... Oh wait, never mind.

/s Alienware console, haha. I can build my own console with parts off of Newegg, Ebay or Craigslist for half the cost with better specs. Who needs to buy this expensive console from a "boutique" console vendor? /s

To all other replies: You did notice the sarcasm tags, right?

I'm pretty sure those were edited in.

Umm... No you can't. Not for half.

The processor and GPU (at least with currently available parts) already take up that "half the cost" budget.

So... Good luck with that.

Bad idea as all this will do is flood the market with confusing names and shatter the "steam machine" name...

That's Valve's fault. Businesses have to do what's best for their bottom line. I mean valve had to see this coming after their delay.

Not ...."Differeniate"

It's "Differentiate", you're missing a "T" Paul.

Nice article!

I remember irate hardware makers when Microsoft made the Surface tablet. I wonder if the hardware makers who were burned by Valve with the steam machine are angrier at Valve than tablet makers were at Microsoft?

Microsoft making the Surface tablet was increasing the competition in the tablet market, but it was footing the (very massive) bill. In this case, Valve convinced PC vendors to spend their own money creating machines to compete in a very low-margin market, and then tell them that they should be able to ship a year after they planned, making the PC vendors eat the R&D for what will become outdated tech by release.

I sincerely hope they're more angry at Valve. Microsoft is nice enough to take the risks with -their own- money.

The manufacturers came to the realization that if something is going to take nine months to 'tweak', then that means that the original concept was horribly flawed in the first place.

In today's world, they have learned to go from drawing board to production in that much time... which means that someone realized how big of a flop it would likely become.

WHERE IS THE ADVANTAGE? IT IS A PC with STEAM lol. Nothing I cannot do with my current PC. I certainly have no problem with semi powerful to powerful PC's in smaller "console" like casing but come on let's just call it what it is once and for all. At this point it is not even offering the "advantage" Steam Machines fans go on about of having a gaming PC that is not Windows based.

avatar

Arthur Dent

The idea is to provide a machine that is as simple to use as the consoles. The problem is that the main advantage of consoles is the price to performance ratio. I know for a fact (because I know people who tried it) that a PC built with the same budget as either of the consoles can't match them (due to the lack of optimisation) in graphics.

LatiosXT

Because it's still a smaller, preconfigured package that you can put in your entertainment center. Honestly I could care less about the "Not Windows based" aspect and I see that as a data point, not a advantage.

Good for them, there's no reason vendors should delay release of something they've spent significant amounts of time and money on just because Valve can't deliver on time. I've been waiting on a certain something from Valve for what seems like an eternity, some OEMs have evidently decided it's not worth the risk to wait.
