Residents living in the U.K. got first crack at Acer's new Ethos laptop line, unique notebooks that sport detachable trackpads you can use as a media remote. It's an innovative design in a form factor that's remained largely the same for years, and it's one that just landed in the U.S. and Canada at price points cheaper than their U.K. counterparts.
There are two baseline models to choose from, the Acer Aspire Ethos AS8951G with an 18.4-inch Full HD (1920x1080) display, and the AS5951G with a 15.6-inch HD (1366x768) display. Both come with scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla glass. Other hardware options include a second generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, up to 16GB of memory, Nvidia GeForce GT 555M graphics with 2GB of dedicated DDR3 memory, 5.1-channel surround sound output, HDMI, DVD or Blu-ray drive, up to 1.5TB of storage, USB 3.0, 1.3MP webcam, and a PowerSmart battery that Acer claims can retain 80 percent capacity for over 1,000 charge cycles.
As for the detachable trackpad, it includes LED buttons that launch music and videos, and can be used vertically or horizontally. Pricing starts at $1,400 for the AS5951G and $1,600 for the AS8951G. Acer says all models will be available this week at leading retailers.
