Is Microsoft getting ready to ditch its earlier stance on WebGL (Web-based Graphics Library)? If changes inside an early Internet Explorer 11 build are anything to go by then Microsoft’s opposition to the 3D acceleration standard could be on its last legs.

Open source group takes issue with Microsoft's controversial UEFI Secure Boot mechanism.

A Spanish open software group has filed a complaint against Microsoft with the European Union claiming that it's unnecessarily difficult to install Linux on Windows 8 hardware. Hispalinux, which is made up of 8,000 Linux users and developers living in Spain, issued a 14-page complaint regarding Microsoft's UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) Secure Boot technology, which the group calls an "obstruction mechanism."

Updates promise “big improvements”

Microsoft on Monday announced the release of updates to three Windows 8 core apps, as had been rumored earlier this month. The company says that the updated apps will deliver a much improved Windows experience through a combination of performance enhancements and entirely new features.

Microsoft continues to evolve the modern UI

Microsoft has denied for months that Windows Blue even exists, but we finally have proof. A forum post from a Polish tech blog contained links for Windows 8 build 9364, and R27 installed the patch to verify its legitimacy. The consensus seems to be that Build 9364 is an “alpha” version of Blue, and while it might not be entirely feature complete, it certainly gives us a pretty good idea of what Microsoft has in store. We would recommend against installing this build for both legal and stability reasons, however that doesn’t mean you're totally shut out. We’ve compiled a full gallery of screenshots showing off the changes, and so far we have to say things are looking up for the modern UI.

SP1 for Windows 7 delivers critical security updates and improves performance.

For those of you rocking Windows 7 -- likely the majority reading this -- Microsoft wants you running Service Pack 1 (SP1), so beginning today it will roll out automatically on Windows Update, the software giant announced in a blog post. You can avoid SP1 by disabling automatic updates, but unless you have a very specific reason to do so, you might as well upgrade, if you haven't already. SP1 contains several security patches, bug fixes, and performance tweaks to keep Windows 7 operating at peak form.

Microsoft needs to reexamine its Surface RT/Pro strategy.

Redmond, we have a problem. Citing "people with knowledge of [Microsoft's] sales," Bloomberg is reporting Surface tablet shipments in the neighborhood of just 1.5 million units, indicating a lethargic start for the company's foray into modern day tablets. This isn't what Microsoft envisioned when it redesigned and re-imagined Windows specifically with touchscreen devices in mind.

Starting today, students with a qualifying email address can try Office 365 for half a year.

Between books, tuition, and booze, going to college is an expensive proposition. It's understandable, then, if students aren't particularly anxious to sign up for a monthly subscription fee for Office 365, Microsoft's cloud-based productivity suite, but when you start throwing around the world "free," it's a good way to get their attention. And so it goes, Microsoft today is offering to let students with a qualifying .edu email address try out Office 365 for an entire semester.

Price cuts for touchscreen laptops running Windows 8 will reportedly be as high as 20 percent.

If you were planning to rush out and purchase a Windows 8 PC this weekend, you may want to hold off for a bit, or least hang onto your receipt in case the model you're interested in receives a discount after the fact. Price cuts for Windows 8 PCs are en route, though depending on which report you read, Microsoft has already started doling out the savings. Let's have a look.
