Loadout should also be on this list though I understand it isn't due to it being only a few weeks old. Plays very similar to Quake/UT2004 but includes hilarious violence and obscene gestures. Not one for the kids, but quite fun if you want a laugh.

Personally I really like Urban Terror, which is not on this list. It may not be the prettiest, but the game play is great. There is a lot of depth to this game, as you can spend a long time learning jumping tricks. At the same time, not much experience is necessary to start having fun. Just install and log into a random server. There are many game modes, with CTF my favorite. Being based on Quake3 engine, it runs on pretty much any PC. Graphics do look decidedly "retro". It feels like playing a Half Life 1 clone. The community is big, so you can find plenty of servers with players.

Hate to break it to you, but your memory is outdated. A lot of things have changed with the 'final' PlanetSide 2 game. A huge patch released in November last year finally fixed a great many issues in the game and also resolved the hardware performance issues with graphics cards. I can say that PS2 does NOT play like any of CoD games I know of, and I have them all. Yes, PS2 is an FPS and yes it shares the same basic type of interface that are used in other FPS games. But that is where the similarities end. There are no powerups or any of the stupid exploits that exist within the CoD games. Lonewolfing will only get you killed a lot faster and more often than any CoD game. This is a major factor in why some folks hate PS2 - they hate teamwork. For me, this is a huge 'plus' attractive feature of the game and emphasizes just how important teamwork is in PS2. PS2 offers great gameplay, epic server sizes, and tons of unlocks and achievements. You have a choice to play for free, or pay-to-win should you choose. I played against veteran players with hundreds of hours in game and held my own against them with an entry level assault rifle and no unlocks. Now that I am beginning to unlock upgrades, I have better survivability and am doing more damage to enemies. Bottom line, if you are looking for a free-to-play MMOFPS, PlanetSide 2 is the answer.

...at least that rock you've been living under will keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer :P

I'd like to see UT 2004 become free to play with alot of support like Team Fortress 2 has. I think UT 2004 has better game play than TF2. I have played both games a ton. If UT 2004 had the support that TF2 has, alot of people would still be playing it OVER TF2.

We can always nuke epic with a petition. I mean, it's about time. All I want them to include from ut3 is the hoverboard.

I am with ya man!

Warframe is freaking gorgeous and right for RPG junkies who love leveling up skills and equipment.

Every time I've played, I'm stunned it's free.

Warframe keeps getting the short shrift around here, though. Mark implies it is just some alpha or beta game, when, in fact, it's not--it's fully finished. The developers just keep adding free content to it.

Imagine RPG super hero ninjas--in space.

Regarding Tribes: Ascend: I thought the developers had stopped supporting the game and no longer communicate with players? I know the servers are still up, but weren't the forums taken down?

Great franchise, and Ascend had tremendous potential in the beginning, but the developer couldn't bring to bear the talent, insight, planning and support needed.

Quake Live is such a pure and perfect design, but it is definitely hungry for players.

World of Tanks? More like world of grind. Why is WarThunder not on this list? The tank portion of the game is in closed beta right now and the aircraft side is very fun.

There's also Firefall.

Beautiful design, and fun for a while, but the repetitiveness and shear amount of grinding required was too much for me.

GR:O and Warframe are my short list for shooters.
And once the Devs figure out how to make GR:O F2P again, the list will get shorter.

I'm surprised you didn't include Planetside 2...

We included Planetside 2 in our best f2p MMO story. Don't worry, we gave it some love. ;)

That is because the game is trash ran by a trash company. SOE must be a recipient of bailout money because I have no idea how it stays afloat with such horrible games and decisions. They alienated their PS1 fans by trying to make it a call of duty clone and now they are regretting it. I posted this during beta years ago.

I know right? I think the best IS PlanetSide 2.

+2 for PS2.

I want to see UT2004 free. I love that game! Perhaps the most funny to play game ever esp. Onslaught.

The colors are bright and simple also.

avatar

TommM

UT2004 was some hella fun. Great maps, weapons and vehicles galore. I thought it was much superior to TF2. Unfortunately, the multi-player version won't work through the Steam client and that's about the only place you can find it now.

avatar

legionera

Are you serious? I played it 2-3 months ago and the multiplayer was just fine. There were several servers full of bots. Is it really not working?

Titalfall videos have been giving me a hankering for mech action. Gonna check both mech suggestions to tide me over.

Forgot APB Reloaded.

We included it in our best f2p MMO article: http://www.maximumpc.com/16_best_free_play_mmos_2013#slide-2

Only games up there that I have played are TF2 and World of Tanks. Everyone has played TF2, and it is pretty fun. I actually really liked World of Tanks. On weekends when I have nothing to do, I occasionally pay for a premium account. But can burn out very quickly.

'Everyone has played TF2'

No, everyone has not. I don't play PvP games because I find no enjoyment in them, I prefer single player games or MMORPGs.

avatar

Blues22475

Even if you aren't a fan of pvp you can still the mode Mann vs Machine which is coop.

I am not a fan of pvp myself and I play this mode all the time.

Pretty much every link for every game on these pages is broken. Why make a link to each game if it just leads to an error page?

Most of those on the list I have not heard of I'll admit. I do remember playing America's Army the first couple of years it came out. Never revisited it. May do so now. Team Fortress is a howl at times but I haven't played it much over the years.

Reason I'm posting is I just discovered "Ghost Recon Online" a month ago. Me and a buddy have been having a blast playing it. Yes the learning curve is larger than some but the maps are fun, good music-score and sound effects plus it's graphics are better than I'd expect for a freebie (though my fps stops at 60 even with v-sync disabled). Fun fun fun is the main thing. Everyone needs a breather from BF and COD.

Americas army used to be such a great game. Now its just terrible.

I find it odd Urban Terror isn't on this list.

Unfortunately, Mechwarrior Online is still in a glorified beta state. They just-this past Tuesday-rolled out a new UI that radically changes the game's interface for the worse; this is like (Office 2003 -> Office w/Ribbon * Win 95 -> Win 8)^10 Though the beta ended months ago, it is still going for all points and purposes.

The game is horribly unoptimized (why anyone would use CryEngine for a game is a mystery) and still only runs under DirectX9, despite Nvidia long-standing boast that it uses DX11. :(

I need to try Tribes:Ascend at some point. I do wish that Tribes:Vengeance would get stripped of DRM, given widescreen support and put on GOG, as Tribes 2 was (and continues to be) a classic.

avatar

LeopoldStotch

That makes me sad if it is true. I have never played the game, but I wanted to try it after seeing it up there.

avatar

vrmlbasic

It is playable-I still put a lot of time into it-but it is definitely still in a "beta" state.

Perhaps you might not be as annoyed by the new UI as, being a new player, you wouldn't have the old one to compare it with.

Even though it is DX9, with the settings maxed it is almost stressful for a PC and does look rather decent, so there is that.

avatar

Carlidan

Just two games on that list that I play is America's Army: Proving Grounds and Team Fortress. Arma 2 Free looks like a game I might check out.
