What, no TERA on this list? For shame.

As someone who has played XCom from when it came out on 3 floppy's & have played all of them from TFTD to Interceptor and even that TPS abomination Enforcer; I have to say I love 2K's & Firaxis take on my old go to game. Well deserved GOTY.

Let's not go too far with XCOM. It was a decent game, but lacked several things that made the original great. The alien ships felt like multiplayer levels, not ships like the original. The end level was more of the latter and not that spectacular.

Now only if we could get an Unreal 3 using the latest UE, it's high time they brought out a new game in the series!

I still play the original Unreal single player game from time to time. That feeling of being alone, the story being told through dead character logs, and the soundtrack...unforgettable game. It's ancient and I've played through it many times...but I have mad love for that game. Unreal 2 strayed away from what made Unreal.

Well, it's time they made a new "Unreal" game, because all that has come from them over the last few years are UT games.

Poor Cliffy cried he would quit if they ever made another Unreal game, then quit, anyway. Now he's crying about games with cut scenes or narratives or something (Gears of War). Epic should never have allowed that little twat to steer the company away from its roots, its strengths.

Just like Microsoft . . . . Hmmm. Now, there's food for thought.

Lots of suppressed negativity in the article it seems. It seemed like every other article was "well, this game really actually sucked, but it had some good qualities".

It also seems like Unity is as capable as Unreal at this point, as well as being more cross-platform. What is there that really sets it apart?

Dear Epic,

Please design us Unreal Tournament 4 FOR THE PC. Once you've done that. THEN you can port it to the console for all the hip hop culture GTA lovers to enjoy.

Sincerely,

The Unreal Engine 3 is ancient and, as PC ports over the years attest, was designed for the now-ancient consoles. I'll be glad to see it put out to pasture.

On a related note, it is criminal that so many PC ports of UE3 games didn't come with updated textures. The "designed for 256 MB of VRAM" textures in Borderlands make my GPU cry and my eyes water. It's sad that fans have made higher-res texture packs for older UE games like Deus Ex than Gearbox (et al) made for its still-modern UE games.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West could have been fun, but from what I played on the 360 it was like Tomb Raider, only with all the jumping puzzles solved for you and being completely on rails.

Given the prevalence and seriousness of its bugs, I am amazed you included Gears of War. Oh, wait—it's a Microsoft game. I get it, now.

Epic is a console company. Promoting their engine is a waste of time and energy.

You do know Epic started as a PC company don't you?

avatar

vrmlbasic

Which is what makes their transition to being a console focused company so brutal.

As Borderlands 1 & 2 on 360 attest, Epic couldn't even make an engine that ran well on the console after even 4-7 years :(

Cy-Kill

I wouldn't know, the last console I owned was the first gen Xbox from late '01 and that was also in '01!

What does them being a console company have to do with making a very useable multiplatform engine? It's not like their competitors have done much better in recent times.

I love all 3 of the Mass Effect series, and I might get Bioshock Infinite also.

Can you imagine how much coin Epic has made leasing out this engine? Wonder when the 4th version will be released...

Unreal Tournament 3 should have made the list. The variety and detail of the various maps was jaw-dropping for its time. And today it still looks (and plays) damn good.

I know! I've heard they charge upwards of $700,000 to lease it! As good as it is, being an indie game developer I wouldn't touch it to release anything commercially because it just wouldn't be cost effective. I have played around with the development kit though and done a few things for fun.

God I love mirrors edge, it is just such a great game and the graphics still stand up today. Even if it is more of a "piece of art" game, like shadow of the colossus, it has such satisfying game play. Borderlands 2 is a really good game as well. Unreal engine 3 was pretty prolific huh?
